Why are people so cruel?

my so called friend is so mean! i asked her to help me to say no to him after he asked me out but all she did was make things worse!!! now he thinks i hate him and i didn't want to hurt his feelings! i do like him but only as a friend and now he won;t talk to me...
LIFE IS SO CRUEL!!!!!!!!!!!!
