How Much of a Night Owl Are You?
I know many people who are the proverbial 'night owls' of society. They stay up really, really late, long after people have gone to bed, having epiphanies and bursts of creativity at unholy hours. Winston Churchill was like that. He'd force people to stay up at 2 AM to discuss war tactics. I am like that. I hate going to bed at 9 PM...grr it pisses me off when I have to.
I like to classify night owls into four levels. Who fits in where? Level 0: If, somehow, God decided to make you normal, you'll fit into this category, like most people. If you stay up to midnight, you'll end up sleeping in till 3 PM. And staying up late? Hah. Unless you happen to be partying like a rock star, you won't. Your body can't handle the all-encompassing nighttime. Level 1: You stay up to around 1-3 AM fairly often, but you still get sleepy. You thrive at nighttime, and whenever you can, you stay up quite late. However, you still maintain a good sleep schedule. Level 2 You tend to stay up all night at times, and others you just stay up late. You almost always stay up past midnight. You feel happier and more energetic during this time, and you feel a sort of affinity with the night. Your sleep schedule is somewhat chaotic. And finally... Level 3: You are an earthly manifestation of night. You could be a good candidate to be a vampire. Chances are, you are one if you fit into this category. When the sun sets, your energy and creativity burst outwards, and your energy level is almost unlimited. Only until the sun sets does your night-time euphoria end. Of course, you stay up day after day, getting the pleasant rush of energy when nighttime falls. After all, if you were to stop, you might fall asleep and miss the night. Maybe. Your sleep schedule is non-existent. You sleep at irregular periods and for random periods of time. Guess where I fit? Category 3. Hell, I fight my mom tooth and nail all the time wanting to stay up very late..and oftentimes I do so anyways. But I still manage to get 8-10 hours of sleep every day. Go figure. Well, the night owl trait runs in my family, so it's probably genetic. Who cares. This is coming from a kid who is posting this at 4 in the morning wide awake. I can't even sleep without sleep aids...oh well, doesn't hurt me really. So, where do you fit in? I'd love to hear from you guys. If you care about me, you'll post here. Just kidding. Nobody knows me here anyways, they don't care either way. ~Bynary Fission

Re: How Much of a Night Owl Are You?
Im posting at 7:30 AM and I have work in the hour.
Before I would just wake up at midnight and stay up, work, come home around 3:00 PM and sleep and do it all over again. I'm level 3 for sure i'd say. |

Re: How Much of a Night Owl Are You?
Your description is quite inaccurate.
I would say that a person cannot claim the title of "night owl" unless they regularly see sunrises from the wrong end. Just "staying up late" isn't enough. You need to be awake when it comes to be "early". Furthermore, it's not about "staying up" at all. It's about just doing it. If you have to "stay up", then you're forcing it. And a comment directed at the topic creator in particular: if you're in young enough that you're still in school (which is what it sounds like if you're complaining about your mommy not letting you stay up), you should really not screw around with staying up late like that. You claim to get 8~10 hours of sleep, but how is this possible with you being up until 4 AM? If you have school in the morning, that's less than 4 hours of sleep. Perhaps it is because you don't have school today specifically? That said, you would be in bed around 11 PM to get a minimum of 8 hours of sleep, unless you live on a reverse cycle (like Adamaja mentioned above), and in that case, I would say that you would be quite stupid to do so, so long as you're not yet out of high school.

Re: How Much of a Night Owl Are You?
I'm somewhere between lvl 1 and 2 . I'd be lvl 3 if I didn't have to work during the day though.

Re: How Much of a Night Owl Are You?
The levels as described above pertain only to tendency, given that time is available, whereas in real life, a person's nightly nature will be significantly affected by schedule.
That being said, I'm a level-0 weekday and a level-2 weekend. |

Level Dos. And strangely enough, last night about 3am I felt the creativity to make a banner, get a new avatar after 1.3 years, and start making a song on keyboard. Weird.

Re: How Much of a Night Owl Are You?
I personally get between 20-50 hours of sleep a week so I'm sure i would fall in your level 3 category.

That's quite a range of hours, at 20, you might be a 3, but at 50 you're about an average joe.

Re: How Much of a Night Owl Are You?
I don't know your exact distribution of sleep hours, but I figured that an average night of sleep is 8 hours, so I did a bit of math. If you had 50 hours of sleep in one week (7 days), that'd come out to just a little over 7 hours a night. Pretty close to average.

Re: How Much of a Night Owl Are You?
We spend a third of our life sleeping, any more than that and you're probably sleeping way more than what should be considered a "level 3".
