Re: My computer isn't charging anymore.
It would be the charger not the battery as even with a dead battery the computer will run off just the charger.
Or, you're unlucky and it's a hardware issue with the DC input on the laptop, which is highly unlikely, just order a new charger |

Re: My computer isn't charging anymore.
I'm guessing her charger died a few hours ago. She's gone until tomorrow.

Re: My computer isn't charging anymore.
that happened to my laptop the other day but it was a problem with the charger itself, i think i ran my comp with it plugged in for too long and it fried.

Re: My computer isn't charging anymore.
The little prong inside the computer which connects to the charger is quite loose. Wiggling the charger around while it's plugged in typically results in shutting the whole thing off. Usually it charges quite well if I close the laptop and then press the charger in forcefully, but nothing works.
I'm gonna try to take it to a computer store, but I'm not sure those exist in Mississippi. |

Re: My computer isn't charging anymore.
Yay, I'm covered under warranty. Which means I had to deal with Gateway Tech Support -- boo.
Talked to one tech who told me I have to ship it off and have the motherboard replaced (sounds extravagant, but if it's free I'll do it?). Told him I'd have to clear it with my dad since we have to pay for shipping. Techie told me to just call back and authorize repairs, so I had to deal with the horrible automated voice that asked me to speak my responses instead of granting me the convenience of just pressing numbers. During the conversation with the second tech, there was silence while the guy looked up the first call, then he muttered, "Idiot. [pause] OH! NOT YOU! THE LAST TECH. SORRY." Then he told me I'm still under warranty and then forgot I'm under warranty and starting giving me price quotes for the repairs. So sometime tonight my dad and I are going to pull out the hard drive or tomorrow I am going to take the whole thing to a professional and have THEM remove the hard drive and then we'll be shipping it off and the tech guy assured me it would be back before I have to go back to Texas. He also couldn't figure out how to add sales tax, and so he just assumed Mississippi doesn't have a sales tax. I'm pretty sure they do. =) |

Re: My computer isn't charging anymore.
Wait, wait, pull out the hard drive? What the ****? Hold on a ****ing minute. I don't understand how that has anything to do with the power. Your problem sounds hardware based, and the hard drive will have nothing to do with any of that stuff. And uhh, I don't know about your warranty, but every ones I've ever heard of are ones where opening your computer voids the warranty (d'oh). All it takes is a few screws and slipping it out, but at the same time there's the whole warranty deal.
This sounds extremely fishy. I'm more of a PC than a laptop builder, but at the same time I know a bit of my way around things, and this doesn't sound quite right. My best advice to you: don't touch it. Send it in, and THEY can remove it THEMSELVES, given that THEY are warrantying THEIR system. That tech guy must be out of his effing head. EDIT: sorry for the harsh tone.

Re: My computer isn't charging anymore.
It probably is the motherboard, since portable devices tend to have the connectors for charging mounted on the board itself.
Ever taken apart a cell phone? It's fun =) |

Re: My computer isn't charging anymore.
If it's free, let them do it. You've got a higher chance of getting upgraded equipment anyways.

Re: My computer isn't charging anymore.
No, no, no, the only reason I'm taking out the harddrive is because even though the guy who placed the order made a note saying they were NOT authorized to run a sweep they still might scan it and reinstall windows. Since I can't turn on the computer to back it up, they told me my best bet is to take out the harddrive and back it up on something else. The tech sat there and explained to me which part to unscrew to take out the harddrive.
I'm gonna take it somewhere and see what can be done. Maybe my files can be backed up in the five or so minutes of power I have left. And, yeah, when I ran my cell phone through the washer I tried to take it apart so it could dry out better. |

Re: My computer isn't charging anymore.
Ok all you need is an AC pin resolder. Since you have Gateway service they will only replace the motherboard. If you take your HDD to a local PC repair store they can hook up the HDD externally and back up your docs/pic/files to a dvd. If and when you do send in the repair to Gateway they will format your machine. I see this repair (ac pin resolder) at least 2 times a week. All labor work can do for as low as 60 if you hassle the repair place enough.
