Wireless internet card
Alright so I live at a tennis academy/boarding school and the internet here is really choppy so I want to get one of those wireless internet cards, the kind that can connect anywhere a cell phone can.
However, my parents said they didn't want me to buy one because they realize that nothing will be blocked if I get it. But I have the cash for the monthly fees or whatever, and I want to get one. So my question is this: Is it possible to simply purchase one and a monthly subscription (I've heard anywhere from 25-150$ a month) without said subscription being attached to a cell phone bill. I would like to go to a verizon store here and buy one and just pay cash upfront- is this possible? Any suggestions or answers are appreciated, thanks in advance. |

Re: Wireless internet card
Call verizon and ask, and wired defeats the purpose Lamoc. For some reason I doubt verizon would let a customer buy just the wireless card plan without a cell phone with 400 extra things to tag on your bill. :/

Wait, what? Do they have some reason to mistrust your free use of the internet?

Re: Wireless internet card
Insert Squeek's age-old mentioning of how the Internet is a proper noun and that there is only one of it, so there's no way your school can have an Internet. It has a connection to the Internet.
I know of no wireless card that charges money in terms of monthly fees. Seriously, what are you even talking about. I bought a crappy USB wireless adapter for $5 because my super-old laptop doesn't have integrated wireless for my in-lecture usage. Look into that, perhaps. |

Planning on calling verizon and asking, don't want to waste a trip to the store to find out I can't just buy one upfront. Any other comments/suggestions? |

He's talking about a mobile broadband card. Ever see the commercial where the two guys are sitting on the park bench and have that odd little block sticking out of their laptops? One's using Cingular's EDGE and the other is using Sprint's Mobile Broadband (I forget if it has its own name; irrelevant). Think of it in terms of this analogy: Landline phone is to cell phone as wi-fi is to mobile broadband. Basically, one has a certain and limited range, whereas the other can be used virtually anywhere. Most new laptops should have a slot for it; it's a very distinctive port. If you have an old laptop, I doubt you'd have the slot.

Well, still, I'd think you'd know what mobile broadband is, regardless of that fact.

Re: Wireless internet card
I have 0 interest in wireless / mobile anything. If I could have negative interest, I would.
I hardwire everything I own because wireless / cordless things are unreliable and slow. The only wireless device I have is a cell phone and I really wish it had fewer features because maybe the battery on it would last longer than three days if it did. |

Re: Wireless internet card
...
I've achieved peer-connected download speeds of 600+ kbps and peer-connected upload speeds of 200+ kbps on a wireless G connection in my house, routed from a cable connection. Let me run three speed tests right now. 1st DL TEST: 2.24 Mbps or 286.25 KB/sec 2nd DL TEST: 1.78 Mbps or 227.75 KB/sec 3rd DL TEST: 2.38 Mbps or 305 KB/sec 1st UL TEST: 853.00 kbps or 106.63 KB/sec 2nd UL TEST: 802.00 kbps or 100.25 KB/sec 3rd UL TEST: 907.00 kbps or 113.38 KB/sec Remember, this is on a wireless G home network. No speedboost or anything, just a normal Linksys WRT54G and an Intel PRO/Wireless Card. As you can see, there's nothing slow or unreliable about it.

Re: Wireless internet card
nForce is trying to prove to me that wireless is just as good as wired at this point. Nothing to do with the thread.
My response: I don't care. I know how to run a wire from my router to my computer and it's a lot easier than trying to get a good signal through two feet of brick and two stories. |
