The video game industry is boring now.
I am the only one who things this? I mean, sure Sony and Nintendo are going to release their new consoles, but the line-up is mostly made up of generic titles.
For a while, I was pretty interested in video games and whatnot began with imported versions of DDR, and the US releases of ICO and Shadow of the Colossus, and Katamari Damacy. But for a while now, nothing has sparked my interest. Sure, I think it is cool Wii is going to offer games from previous consoles, but that's just for nostalgic reasons and it isn't really "innovative" and I don't know about this new controller thing. Whatever, here's you chance to enlighten me, vent all the reasons you are totally pump for the future of video games. |

Re: The video game industry is boring now.
This reminds me of the Wikipedia article on the Venture Brothers I was just reading:
"Perhaps more telling, however, is the sense of societal failure. All around the Venture Compound one sees the artifacts of the Jet / Space Age — supersonic nuclear-powered jets, fantastic inventions and gleaming science. But, forty years later, those Jet Age relics are breaking down, and their promises (as well as the paradise that science and technology were to have ushered in) have all been broken. There is perhaps no better symbol of this than Gargantua One, the gigantic space station and "ninth wonder of the world" built by Doctor Jonas Venture. It was to be Doctor Venture's perfect legacy and gift to the world, but by the present day it was virtually abandoned and eventually crashed to Earth. Similarly, the grandiose plans and tyranny of supervillainy have given way to the almost pathetic bureaucracy of the Guild of Calamitous Intent. Government agencies like the Office of Secret Intelligence are mere shells spouting patriotic jingoism that has little bearing on the realities of the present day. The future as promised never arrived and the next generation is incapable of even running their own lives, let alone thinking big or creating anything." I think I know how you feel, Jewpin. I remember some time after Half-Life 2 I just got TOTALLY burned out on first-person shooters and I couldn't bring myself to play one since I couldn't help but see how they were all the same old stuff. I also have a habit of picking up MMORPGs with enthusiasm, and then in about 2 weeks getting bored with it and never touching it again. But the future always holds promise, and there's always something fresh to discover. Like when I found out about Cave Story, or Sin & Punishment. Why, just today I grabbed a pirated version of DEFCON and had a total blast with it. |

I totally agree with Jewpin. The video game industry so far has been more of the same for the past 6 years.
On the plus side it means I'll be sticking to classics like Counter-Strike without having to feel like an old man. |

Re: The video game industry is boring now.
I'm not really pumped at all. I know that 3 years ago I would have walked into Gamestop instead of walking past one like I do now just because there really isn't anything THAT mind blowing I guess. Sure there's the new Xbox, the wii, and the new PS3 coming out but Im just meh about all of it.
I guess the games just aren't that fun[?] as they used to be? I feel as though most people who are putting games out are just trying to get some cred or to just get paid and the games they've created are either average or below average. Nothing can really distinguish it from this one or another.

I imagine you are just in a gaming slump. You proberly need to take a break. I experienced my first one a few months ago where I just could not stand to play rpgs anymore for quite a while. You may find things intresting again after a while.

Re: The video game industry is boring now.
As a form of entertainment, Video Games are still relatively new. They gained popularity during our lifetimes.
Now that the people who have grown up on them are getting older, and it's now more mainstream, of course a slump is going to occur. It happened with movies. It happens with each generation of popular fiction and poetry. It happens with each generation of music. I personally think the CURRENT state of consoles was the slump, and we're finally getting some stuff that will shake up the pot a little bit. Well, I guess I should say we're finally getting the Wii. The Playstation 3 and X-Box 360 aren't significant enough leaps in technology to warrant the massive cost of the systems. At least the Wii is saying "Hey, let's make a console system that, you know, is there for gamers." Last edited by Squeek; 09-28-2006 at 06:34 PM.. Reason: Hi. |

Re: The video game industry is boring now.
I agree here. What Jewpin says about the games just being the same old story is true. However I'm pretty confident when you have a blast at the Wii you'll start to love games again. I think that you have a point that games are just generic now but I really think that the way you'll play them will make them a totally new experience. Yea it may just be another fighting, adventure or shooting game but it won't seem like that with the Wii. It'll be much more than that.

Re: The video game industry is boring now.
The gaming industry has gone mainstream. You create what makes you the most money. Pumping out systems and games of low quality is the best business move for company's that want to get rich quick. Release a good one every once and a while to gain reputation. It'd be economically stupid not to do what the gaming industry is doing now. I'm expecting though, that as soon as all the new consoles come out, and at the prices they are, the industry will change for the better to accommodate the loss of popularity that is bound to ensue.

Im thinking that Nintendo is doing the right thing with the DS and Wii, new stuff, thats what I want and they have it. ps3 and 360 are just shiny xboxes.

I just hope that eventually, video games drop in price overall. They are too expensive for the entertainment they deliver anymore for the mass market appeal that they have. If they are gonna churn out crap games like crap movies are churned out, make'um affordable so we don't feel so bad about blowing our money. |

Re: The video game industry is boring now.
I don't even give a **** about innovation. I'm going to learn Japanese so I can play massive amounts of visual novels and JRPGs, which are mostly stagnant genres.
And that's for the best. **** American games, seriously. I can't stand any games made by American (or non-Japanese) dev studios. Thank god for companies like NISA, Atlus, and Hirameki. |

Try out the new ps2 game Okami. Really unique gameplay/style/everything. I bought it already, and am loving it.
