Default Step Mania Problem, need help

Hello,

I recently got a new computer and redownloaded step mania and all of my songs.

The problem i'm havingn now is that when i play songs, they will occasionally "skip". They'll just seem to jump ahead in the middle of playing them and it's really pretty annoying.

Is there anything i can do to fix this? Or is it just my computer?

Lower the resolution. Go into Graphic options and make everything lower. It helps ALOT.

well i tried lowering it all the way down and that didnt help. I also tried the raise it all i could and it was still the same. Neither really made the skipping in songs happen less or more.

Could it possibly be program confliction or something? any input would be great.

Could be something running in the background... but I couldn't be sure.

Turn off some processes that you don't need running when you play. But you really shouldn't have to do that with a new computer.

ya thats what i'm not getting. Now i'll admit that i'm not the most brilliant mind when it comes to computers. But i did forget to mention something and wanna see if this could be causing songs to skip.

These songs were all burned on cd's for me from a friend. Now the cd's were rather scratched up but i was still able to extract them to SM. It seems like a far out idea to me but could the scratches from the cd hurt the song files even if put onto the computer?

Actually yes that could be the reason, try just playing the mp3 if it always cuts out at one part then the mp3 is corrupted and the sim is no good.

well i went and played the mp3's out of real player. I played 10 songs in which i've seen them skip in SM. All of these songs played perfectly in real player. I have no clue as to whats causing this anymore.

Did you actually copy the files onto your harddrive? Stepmania dislikes running things off of CDs.

I also get two kinds of skipping on my iBook (but none on my PC). Every dozen or so songs it suddenly skips for about half a second (freezes, then skips ahead) which is extremely annoying. And on certain songs it skips all the time by very small amounts. You can play it normally, but the arrows are jerky. I think it's something to do with decoding the mp3s at certain bitrates.

StepMania also dislikes Macs. The skipping will happen more or less. The best you can do is just to always play SM on a low resolution while nothing else is running.

About week after I made a song it stopped to work. The banner turned pink and when I play the song I don't get the music. Would you know why this is happening.

This happened to me too, and I'm not sure of the cause. But I was able to fix it. And it happened because I downloaded Euphoria, and had Euphoria already (different songs), and ended up screwimg up the first Euphoria song where it would not play, and had a pink banner. I figured out that it was still playing because the song was still connected someway to SM strangely (it was in the recycle bin). So, I emptied my recycle bin, and everything was fixed.

I dunno if this problem relates to your problem in someway WhitShadowZO, but you should investigate and see if my problem is what's causing your problem.

OK
I fixed the problem.

You see, when I first made the song I had all the components (mp3, dwi, etc.) in a folder called New Folder. Then made a new folder in the section called New Folder also for a song I didn't get to do. (It was suppose to be some test to see if I could get a movie to run without code). Anyway, I renamed the other song its title and it must have still recognized it not as "Once upon a Time", which is what I changed it to, but as "New Folder" which has no data in it.

Still confused a little, but hey, it works now. thanks for telling me that it wont work if there a two of them. It was a helpful.

well i ended up fixing this problem. I downloaded the newest version and was able to change settings. The problem was indeed the soundcard. I am now running off software sound and there hasnt been a skip since
