This thread is an offshoot of this thread which I suggest you read.

The three best sites I've seen for classical MIDIs are http://www.classicalmidiconnection.com , http://kunstderfuge.com and http://www.classicalarchives.com in that order. With those three you literally have tens of thousands of public domain MIDIs at your disposal, which is an immense number of songs that could potentially be in FFR.

Basically, the huge lack of classical songs in FFR stems from recorded classical music being so difficult to step correctly, even with advanced syncing methods we have now like DDReam.

Tassel has said himself that "assuming that the remasterer took some time to do his thing, made it sound better than the original MIDI... and the MIDI already came from a creative commons source" he would be "ok with that." So, to get more classical music on FFR we need someone who is skilled in remastering a classical MIDI and making it sound excellent.

Obviously you, the musicians, know this is a difficult task, as someone can be a great musician but still be pretty mediocre at remastering classical MIDIs. FFR could greatly benefit from someone who is skilled in this area.

As far as how this could work:

Obviously, though, someone is not going to convert every MIDI that comes along. What I think we should do is find a converter that would easily convert MIDIs to MP3s, and then afterwards file creators would make the file to the MIDI and find several performances of the MIDI to give the remasterer both reassurance that the file can go on FFR and an idea of what the piece should sound like when actually played. Then, the remasterer would provide the file creator with the MP3 and the file creator would simply sync/adjust the steps to the MIDI to the remastered MP3.

I totally support this. I love classical music but the classical selection of FFR is lacking.

I can decently convert MIDIs to mp3s without the use of a convertor.

I've found that using a normal convertor lowers the sound quality. I dunno, it could just be me.

But yeah, I could remaster/arrange classical songs for FFR, as soon as my workload lightens (meaning once school ends and my composition portfolio is done).

Anyone should be able to load the MIDIs into a sequencer and use a random piano. That's like 75% of the work.

I remember having to do that for Tass once; it's real easy. The only thing I had to fix was the volumes because that was written in all ****ed up.

EDIT: So I just realized you mean classical pieces not involving just a piano. That shouldn't be too bad either, I'll try doing a quick conversion and posting it.

EDIT2: Eh, on a bit of a schedule here, so I just looked for a random piano midi that I love. 10 minute conversion, using a piano synth, and I tested out how BPM shifts would sound in the first twelve measures. The middle section sounds ****ty I'll admit, but I think this shows how easy it is to convert midis. If a SF was used instead of piano synth it would sound better, and the remasterer can also inform steppers of exact BPM change marker locations.

I could make an MP3 of Rachmaninoff's Prelude in C# Minor with only 3-5 BPM changes. I'd rather wait until I get a MIDI cable, though, because the piano sound on my keyboard surpasses the sampler on my computer (Kontakt 2).

don't know if someone already explained this but...

1. You can use the predefined BPM/BPM changes already coded in the MIDI file itself as a reference for stepfile making.

2. To get good quality MP3 sound from a MIDI file, you need a decent synthesizer to play back/record the MIDI file. There are software or hardware synthesizers available. The best ones are usually not free, unless you get them from some other source. Most normal MIDI players/converters sound terrible and/or like previous-gen video game music.

3. I am also interested in this topic, and I have been doing MIDI for about 12 years.

free converters suck. I've tried a lot of them and none of them have the sound I'm looking for

my midi's are not just a simple f*cking piano solo so I can't just plug them into an electric piano unless I'm not getting something

and finally how the hell do you convert a midi without a converter, live recording?

Haha, I did a really ****ty conversion though, wasn't paying too much mind. If something like this, with better quality, is needed than I wouldn't mind making a few more.
