Re: Nintendo Confirms New Console for 2012, Details at E3 2011
I wouldn't say it's necessarily changed from gameplay to graphics. It's just that for certain games, having amazing graphics gets your games sold. But it doesn't mean that the game will be fun enough to be replayable (e.g. Crysis). However, if you are going for the gameplay route, your game needs to be fun enough to play again and again, but you need to reap profit from this. This is why multiplayer has made such a huge advent over the recent years and why single-player modes have become easier (less ROI when your game is harder, as you want people to start playing online ASAP). Furthermore, having beastly graphics requirements makes it harder to engage in online play if hardware isn't adequate.

Re: Nintendo Confirms New Console for 2012, Details at E3 2011
I imagine what would happen to the video gaming industry if Nintendo just stopped making consoles and games.
One one hand, Microsoft and Sony would get really cocky and just dominate the video gaming industry. But their idea of innovation would be enhancing graphics until we're playing CoD in real life. Any idea of pushing technology in a creative direction would be very slow. On the other hand, this doesn't seem bad. If Nintendo wasn't pushing all this innovation, you wouldn't see all these crappy PS3 Move and Kinect games. I do admit some Kinect games are a bit fun, but they don't size up compared to hardcore gaming. How fast could you really move in CoD compared to using a standard controller? You can only become so superhuman using a Kinect Sensor. No innovation would mean these crappy games wouldn't be made, and Sony and Microsoft would stick to what they're actually good at. But then the family/casual gaming industry would die for the most part. In the end, I think it's nice to have family oriented games sometimes. Taking a break from shooters and competitive fighting and playing things like RPG's and Mario games is enjoyable. If gaming was always taken so seriously I probably wouldn't play it. But I wouldn't consider these casual games something to dominate the industry, but they should still be around. Not everyone wants to face you in CoD just because you're known as the best player (AKA you have no life and whore the game 24/7). I dunno, just some thoughts. |

I'd like to add at this point that if Nintendo doesn't nail online play this time around I'm going to start shaking babies. No more friend codes, no more lag, get some voice chat, etc etc. Just copy Microsoft, seriously. No one will get mad at you or yell "STOPS COPIES MS". Every last one of your customers will thank you.

Re: Nintendo Confirms New Console for 2012, Details at E3 2011
Maybe I'm misinformed but this looks as though it's Nintendo's only hope seeing as nobody's given a shit about the Wii since around 2009.
I love Nintendo and all but for goodness' sake if they can't get some decent games on their consoles, is it even worth it? It's the whole "PS3 has no games" argument all over again. I mean, come on, Nintendo dominated both the 80s and 90s. I hope they can make a comeback with this new console because I'm sick of the only good games for their hardware being part of the Mario/Zelda/Pokemon etc etc franchises.

I dunno maybe the reason I liked the gamecube so god damn much was because I played Tales of Symphonia near a hundred times.. There was also Metroid Prime and SSBM and all the Mario Party games that I enjoyed so much. Baten Kaitos was a good game for me Yugion the Falsebound Kingdom I think it was called was fun....
Pokemon Colosseum and Pokemon XD Gales of Darkness.. ****, hooking up my gamecube now.

What are you talking about? The Wii has been beating the living hell out the PS3 and the 360.

Oh wait. Luigi's Mansion. I GOTTA GET THIS GAMECUBE BACK UP. People really think the gamecube was bad, but for the game content it had some of the best games for the usual franchises. A lot of Mario and Zelda games reached their peak popularity here, and Pokemon XD was awesome as well. Sonic 2 Battle, Sonic DX, and especially Sonic Heroes towards the end (though it wa on PS2 as well I believe), Pikmin (underrated game, pretty good). The Donkey Kong bongo one was for Gamecube too right? It really did have some sweet games in the casual gaming section. Where it didn't match up in graphics, it overpowered in content and storylines. Wii tried to do the same thing, but I don't think it did it as well. Hopefully they switch up their tactic. But I gotta admit, I have a lot of my childhood on that Gamecube. |

I'm still hooked to Sin and Punishment 2... Why won't anyone talk about that game? It kept my Wii pretty busy, even more than SMG. I wish for more shmups on Nintendo consoles!

Man, I feel old. My childhood was entirely rooted in the PC, SNES, and N64. Good times.

I sometimes crank up the N64 and play some Super Mario 64 and the NES to play some Super Mario Bros. Pretty much the only two games I got addicted to as a kid.

Isn't that GG guys or something? Also I noticed more of a pokemon resurgence in HS rather than college. It seems like kids in college play lots of COD, Brawl, Rock Band and MvC3.

it def. depends on the campus, the social circle, etc. I've seen a ridiculous number of people playing pokemon in my cafeteria. I love that picture up there by the way
