Re: An Open Letter Re: Mods
I get the point of the thread, but I think it was doomed from the topic that chose. Doesn't mean it's a bad thread though! Just that there's obviously some tension in the air and people tend to air that out with stupid posts or something. Least that's what I tend to do sometimes on good ol' GameFAQs nowadays.

Re: An Open Letter Re: Mods
People seem to not care about shitposting in the thread of a mostly good user trying to help out. I guess ignore them. I believe some things that were said here were productive.

Should posts be removed? This is not free speech. By using this forum, you agree to abide by its rules, however much you may personally disagree with them. Not all posts that break the rules are removed, but some that are particularly nasty will (I know some/most of you didn't see Travis' post, but the ban and post removal was definitely warranted as it was genuinely transphobic). Should users see what caused a ban? Because this site's policy is to remove posts that explicitly violate its rules, full transparency isn't possible. You don't get to see the juicy context because making it available to you defeats the purpose of its removal in the first place. As a community, we need to trust that bans are deserved, and bear in mind that there is an appellate system as well if the banned user doesn't feel in fault.

Re: An Open Letter Re: Mods
Re: word filters
Word filters don't solve the problem. Sentences have context and it's pretty dang obvious whatever offensive word you're using. For example, if someone said, "Go back to (country) you (censored word)," it would be painfully obvious what the censored word would be based off of whatever country the person listed. Does it prevent us from seeing the word? Yes. Does it prevent us from knowing what offensive remark was used? Not likely. Does it stop the offender being a bigot? Nope. How hard is it to avoid a handful of words from a language when there are thousands upon thousands of other words? |
