I'm sorry but I'd rather have my precious machine turned into one of a zombie army of millions. And besides, nobody's controlling my machine if I disconnect it from the internet. :>

Well, the processing power will be entirely limited by connection speed between computers, and I doubt there's any proram that's scalable to work with that number of machines under those conditions for any serious utilization. The thing with a DDoS or something like that is it doesn't require the computers to simultaneously and jointly process and share similar information; each just has to process a small and very simple command sent from another machine. Sending an overflow of packets is a lot easier to do than trying to scale a program over 9,000,000 computers.

Want 1024 cores and 2tb of RAM for processing power? Easy. Check THIS out:

http://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/...-web,1943.html

Buy this and you've got over 1000 cores. It's most certainly affordable for a lot of people who are serious about this stuff. If I had any practical application for it, I'd buy one.

Kinda my thought on this as well. To be safe, just make sure your pc is:

1. Free of viruses before and during April 1st
2. All security software is updated
3. Don't use internet that day (if you do, make sure you know your antivirus is running and you are travelling to sites you know are completely safe and maybe even stay away from any sites with ADS.)

I'll just go offline that day. One day won't hurt.

I've already decided I'm gonna stay on the internet, I can hardly survive more than a couple of hours without it, lol. Just stay off of fishy-looking sites that you don't usually go to, don't download any pr0nz, etc...
I'll just idle on Rizon's IRC and post on a few forums, the usual...

It's not that hard to avoid viruses unless they're put on your machine via USB. Just don't download any files you don't trust, defiantly binary files (.exe or for whatever OS you're using). Use a script blocker on your browser such as NoScript for FireFox, and just don't enable any scripts you don't have to. This isn't as much of a big deal as you guys are making it. I'm saying this now...if you reformat, you're retarded. Also enjoy your iMac, they suck balls and are still prone to viruses.

Oh, I was gonna make a thread about this, but I see that it has been made before.

I heard about it around the same time this thread was made, some time around the 27th. Didn't really think much about it, but the more and more that it keeps being talked about, the more and more it has me thinking.

Either way, I backed up all of my important stuff, and I have my Windows XP CD handy, because while I should avoid the internet--I'm an overachiever at school and I don't do my reports last minute. With that being said, I'm trying to finish off my senior research paper because it's due this Friday.

I'll be ready though. A full scan through Kaspersky AV and careful site usage should do me well.

You do realize that a worm is not a virus, and they don't even operate similarly, right? They are polar opposites in terms of operation and function, but facts don't seem to matter all that much nowadays. /shrug oh well

You're fine, and your cute little AV won't stop anyone who really wants to get in. It's like using a fly swatter against a rancor. HURR

And Conficker is a rancor that wants to get inside your anus.

psst guys http://tech.yahoo.com/blogs/null/132464

"What won't work? Turning your PC off tonight and back on on April 2 will not protect you from the worm (sorry to the dozens of people who wrote me asking if this would do the trick). Temporarily disconnecting your computer from the web won't help if the malware is already on your machine -- it will simply activate once you connect again."

ouch. =p

Tools > internet options > delete cookies.
Or Tools > Clear private data > etc..

Yeah, I'm just going to keep my comp off tomorrow.

I just did a virus scan and I didn't have anything, but still.

Edit: Also backed up my HD.

At exactly 3:53:59 AM EST tomorrow morning, every infected computer will automatically open PowerPoint, and run a macro that inserts a text box with size 72 font that reads "APRIL FOOLS!" And then all will return to normal.

If you read anything in this thread you would know turning off your computer would just postpone it until you turned it back on, but backing your **** up is a good idea.
