RATO: A History of the chart and the current AAA
Shoutouts
I would first like to start with a shoutout to SillyFangirl for AAAing this beast of a chart. It's got a long history and finally achieving a perfect score on this song deserves a thread to talk about its history. Background Reluctantly Accepting Temporary Overexhaustion (RATO) was released 12/23/08. To get an idea of how messy the scores were around a week after its release, I used the Wayback machine to get the top 10 leaderboards on December 31st, 2008. Initially on RATO, just mashing a full combo on this chart would already land you in the top 10. While I don't remember what the Rank 1 score was at the time, the following picture with stat breakdowns should give a rough idea of how the score was still 100+ goods. What was worse was that at the time you needed to get a full combo on the chart as well, so players ended up mashing a lot.

preemptively coming in: my old RATO score was not stealth - the DF engine that was being used at the time was slightly borked with mods because I was trying to add some back when I didn't know how to do anything at all.
this history is really neat, thanks Dossar. |

Re: RATO: A History of the chart and the current AAA
Cool, now I don't wanna hear my patterns in my files are too hard anymore.
Also, grats, Doss you wanna break down what in particular made this file complete ass to score on? Or if SFG wants to that'd be neat. |

Crazy to think that 11 years of community progress and development of skills as a whole attributed to the culmination of the AAA this week.

Re: RATO: A History of the chart and the current AAA
theres a [1][1] minijack near 1000~ notes and a [2][2][2] triplet jack near 1200~ notes that are aids to AAA, the rest isnt bad

Re: RATO: A History of the chart and the current AAA
Quote:
In one of SFG's runs, the triplet 16th jack has a 1-frame hiccup which actually speeds it up to a 300 BPM 3-note jack. That's also what resulted in the miss in my 17-5-1-5 score if I remember correctly. For someone who has a good handle on 16th jumpstreams and anchor patterns at 240, most of the chart is playable. There are also the 48th rollwalls that are easy to screw up (either going in or coming out of them) because they start or end with note gaps and at that speed it's 180 BPM 64th rolls after conversion, so it's a mini vibrating cluster in a sense. Some of the 32nd patterns are also particularly nasty, and at 240, some of the 32nd placements result in 2 frame minijacks. Taking the above into account, it helps explain why someone can cut their score down to 30 goods, but then getting to 20s is hard, and then even worse getting less than 20. This also doesn't take into account mindblocks that can occur (I had a mindblock on one of the anchor patterns in the second half of the chart which resulted in me getting 4 goods at once, most of the time).

Re: RATO: A History of the chart and the current AAA
I already knew that someone would eventually get the AAA on this song. For a while I thought Staiain would be the one to do it considering his beast of a teens FC a while back.
Then SillyFanGirl shows up out of nowhere and surprises everyone with an SDG, followed by the elusive AAA a few weeks later. Mad props.

Re: RATO: A History of the chart and the current AAA
Can't wait for EtienneSM's Score Progression video on this.
Really though, this was a neat history! It's amazing how far the skill ceiling's been raised, to pull off something players back then likely didn't consider a possibility. Though, that's a broken record at this point with ridiculous boss songs eventually getting taken down. Congrats to you, SillyFangirl!
