"He decided to fill the jar with guano (i.e. bat droppings)." You could easily substitute that back in: "He decided to fill the jar with bat droppings." And the sentence is pretty much the same in essence. "Eating pushpins is about as safe as playing with live current (i.e. not that safe at all)." => "Eating pushpins is not that safe at all." With "e.g," you're just listing a few examples that don't necessarily constitute an exhaustive list. There may be a lot more than you aren't listing but are equally valid. "I love classical-music FFR charts (e.g. OMW, Revo, and Molto)." You might argue that these things are examples that "clarify" with something specific, too, like with "i.e.", but it doesn't work: "I love the OMW, Revo, and Molto FFR charts." Now you make it sound like you like ONLY those three, whereas the original sentence was much broader in scope. Last edited by Reincarnate; 11-9-2013 at 04:00 PM.. |

Re: Grammatically Speaking
haha the bored one is dumb, that's not grammar just an archaic rule of preposition usage which doesn't make a lick of difference. it doesn't even have a real explanation after it other than "yeah that one's wrong lol sorry." the definitions of prepositions are so fluid it hardly matters which one you use half the time; regardless of the definition, you'll still get your point across even if it's blatantly wrong

Re: Grammatically Speaking
I'm not exactly sure as to what grammar is.
Can someone elaborate? |

Re: Grammatically Speaking
I think if everyone in the US took it, the average would be a lot lower. I'm pretty sure a majority of the people that take it are grammar nazi's trying to make their e-peen larger.
