Re: 10th Official FFR Tournament - Round 1 Songs
The rule is in place to prevent sudden alternate accounts and new players coming out of nowhere, and to properly place players into their divisions. What's not fair about that?

Re: 10th Official FFR Tournament - Round 1 Songs
My thoughts on this week's songs.
Rainbow Road [nanobii]: Beautiful song. As many others have quickly noticed, I also agree that this chart is far longer and harder than D1's introductory song of previous tournaments. The file itself is pretty good, although some very difficult to hear 16ths (in between audible 16ths), as well as some minor inconsistencies (e.g. the layering of the snare drum starts a bit early on the last part of the song) bug the hell outta me. The song is a good choice to introduce new players IMO. Polargeist: Definitely a bit more challenging than D1's song, despite people claiming it to be easier, which is sort of a stretch. I think it's one of those songs that's easier to execute for the skilled player, but harder for novices. Nice song from Geometry Dash, which I had no clue would be a Newgrounds song either. Session (Ghost in the Machine Remix): Honestly? This song would be a lot more fun if you could actually play the scratches. Implement this with an IIDX controller, and it'll make this fairly nondescript song more fun to play. Fill Me Up With Snacky Happiness: To me, the song illustrates a cute little alligator just eating up cute little snacks and food in some sort of mobile game app. The file plays great - not too boring (which swing songs often suffer from) and a song genre that people can relax to and have fun. I particularly like when the sax plays a pattern where you have a few 34321 rolls. Truth (xKore Remix): The truth is that this file is messy. I do recall making several suggestions when judging this file, and I'm sad that nothing was done to it. The overall scheme and intent of the chart was fun, but the execution could be cleaned up. The truth hurts sometimes. Lexus Cyanixs: Way harder than most intro D6 songs from the past, but I feel that can be affected easily by one's ability to hit bursts. Hi19hi19 told me this was a small sort of "payback" for all of the awkward files I've made in the past, but I've managed to overcome it. Took a bit of studying to understand the two main difficult sections, but eventually I got it. Still takes work to execute this file properly though. Pandemonium: I'll be honest...there are quite a number of patterns that I don't like in this file. The 24th patterns just preceding the climaxes of the first and second choruses are extremely awkward, though I seem to be the first one here mentioning it. Of course, the weirdest part is the 32nd junkwall that everyone IS talking about. The piano playing in this song strongly suggests to make for a flowy file, but the chart was anything but (could possibly be attributed to an emphasis on buzzes as opposed to piano). Still fun to score on from the perspective of replayability. |

hi19, even when it's your own file, you still manage to get wrecked by bmah.
Is this the beginning of an era where one gets hi19'd (akin to Middie's endless libel or choof's daily post-count quota)? |

Okay then Mister I-love-parallel-structure-because-it's-conventional-and-sufficiently-boring.

Re: 10th Official FFR Tournament - Round 1 Songs
Actually, it was just the epistrophe of "praising the bowel gods" that was better accommodated with parallel structure in my opinion. Conventionality be damned.

Also yes I put a lot of emphasis on the percussion, especially the buzzes, because to me that part of the song sticks out much more than the piano ever does. Even the louder piano chords feel big (where I used hands) because they coincide with heavy percussion. Quote:
Like what you wrote is the fundamental essence of bmahness. I'm so done. I want to be mad, but A. you were very nice about it and B. I think your opinion is correct. So no mad here, if anything I'm mad at myself because I feel I should have known this is how it would wind up being received. I'll just apologize again for the awkwardness but be proud of the fact it's a good scoring file and feels like a worthy accomplishment when you do finally get it. Thanks for the reviews.

Re: 10th Official FFR Tournament - Round 1 Songs
If it's any consolation -- I actually like the disjointed feel of the patterning in the more dissonant melodic areas; I'm not sure if it was intentional but the file's rigidity spikes in the mid-section when the triples hit, and it's not because of the triples themselves.
Remember how you talked to me and said that you would want to see a detailed approach of how I take files on when starting from scratch? The feeling is certainly mutual, especially with a file like this. I don't think my file for a song like this would have been anywhere near what yours is, and it's a good thing that you got this version in first. |

Re: 10th Official FFR Tournament - Round 1 Songs
For me, Session was the best file in this round. Good job VisD!
Pandemonium is easy to chirp at for being on the awkward side but I think that alone adds something to its value. I didn't find any patterning in the bursts to be rhythmically satisfying from a playing perspective and agree that a more roll-type pattern would have better suited those sounds. The 16th piano runs and hands going to the chords were great along with the 12th + 8th galloping rhythms towards the end. |
