Stephen Harper continues to thumb his nose at the world. He wont be laughing when the planet is too warm to live on, and we have no other suitable planets in the solar system.

Re: Bunch of dicks in Canada, eh?
they say they want a more "action" oriented commitment, that there's no real penalty to withdrawing from the kyoto protocol. basically just an excuse. conservatives have already shoved the country in a massive mess

Re: Bunch of dicks in Canada, eh?
Did I read that right? They pulled out because they more or less said it's impossible to meet Kyoto's standards in the required time frame?

Re: Bunch of dicks in Canada, eh?
No penalty? Quitting Kyoto comes with the biggest penalty of all - an uninhabitable, polluted Earth. WHERE YOU LIVE AND BREATHE EVERY DAY.

Re: Bunch of dicks in Canada, eh?
to a politician, anything that isn't money related isn't a penalty. this is exactly how the conservatives think probably.

However, please forgive me if I know little about Canadian politics, but if Canada was already failing to meet the needs of the Kyoto protocol ('09 emissions levels were way out of range), it would be pretty much impossible to meet the standards by next year. If they dropped Kyoto and then signed another treaty to better fit their energy needs while still reducing carbon emissions, that would make a little more sense, but if conservative Canada is anything like the Bush era in the US, I already know that's like wishing upon a star.

@Crashfan
Well, Kyoto was just extended for another 5 years, so I'm not sure how quickly they'll be able to come up with an acceptable alternative. In the meantime, this just gives the energy sector free reign to do as they please. |

Re: Bunch of dicks in Canada, eh?
My personal opinion is that Canada should've never signed into the Kyoto Protocol in the first place, and the required targets were unrealistic. One can do their part in helping the environment independent of these targets. Canada has actually done a decent job at reducing emissions and furthermore proposing ideas/plans to reduce them further. For example, research is being developed in determining the sequestration of carbon from excessive fossil fuels. The problem with the Kyoto Protocol is that the targets were determined to be unfeasible.
The Canadian economy frankly did not benefit from following the Kyoto Protocol. It does not mean that Canada is against global warming; I believe that continuation of the protocol would just eat away at the economy while not even reaching targets. A change in society's mindset through various means such as taxation (e.g. charging for plastic bags), benefits/incentives, and just good habits does a lot more than trying to set a numerical target and forcing a country to change within an expected timeline. I do not wish to go into detail, but that is my opinion on it. I am skeptical. The Kyoto Protocol has good intentions, but is ineffective. Last edited by bmah; 12-13-2011 at 02:21 AM.. |

if you don't believe in global warning then at least care because you don't want to breathe in shitty air every day.

Harper is just trying to kill us.
But yeah I agree, Kyoto expectations are generally unrealistic, but Canada hasn't been doing as much as it could in terms of being more Green, and again, I blame Harper for that. |

I just have to say that if Canada banned cars we wouldn't have to worry about the Kyoto Protocol at all. lmao

First mistake: Posting in Shit Scat.
Second: Caring Third: Why does it matter? We'll all either be dead, or too old to give a flying **** about what goes on when an inhabitable (which I truly don't think will happen) exists. First question I ask you.. Do you believe there ever was a true "Ice Age?" If so, what made the earth warm and melt the ice caps back in the good ole days? Must've been the dinosaurs mass producing products generating large amounts of pollution. Personally, I think the Kyoto protocol is a bunch of BS. Requesting move to Critical Thinking.

Also, the fact that it's gonna warm up and then go into some weird ass new ice age is irrelevant. What's relevant is that we wont survive through it. It's pretty ****ed up that people don't give a shit what happens to the Earth. That's like if you used a blue paintbrush, didn't wash the paintbrush off, and then mixed it into the red and now everyone has to use a red palette with blue in it. We have to take the initiative and fix this now before it gets any further out of hand. Sure, we don't have to care, but we are the generation that either makes or breaks the Earth for us to live on. So if you don't want to care, gg. |
