Re: Stepmania confession
ok he edited post, repeated handjacks are i guess understandable
which probably means you should be investing in better packs if there's so many of those |

Re: Stepmania confession
Yosh, don't bite me!
Hands are okay. I just dislike when stepwriters overuse them so that almost 90 per cent of the steps are like above. Edit: Also, I'm really thinking of releasing my collection of stepfiles to the public. I've got many songs or versions of songs that are hard to find. And really nice ones ^_^ Last edited by VickyFox; 04-25-2016 at 12:56 PM.. |

Re: Stepmania confession
Oh yea, I edited the mines image on my theme to be a transparent square because I absolutely can't read mines no matter what. Anything that moves registers as a note in my mind. There is zero chance of me hitting them if I can't see them though.

Re: Stepmania confession
Sometimes I pick a song I like, go in SM Editor, use the correct bpm and then I just jam randomly with the song playing to place notes. I tune it a little in case I don't like certain mess I happened to do while jamming and then I'm done. I know I will enjoy the file because it can't be faster than me since I'm the one who smashed the keys.

Re: Stepmania confession
of all the packs i've ever downloaded i usually only play like 3-4 files from each one, based on the attractiveness of the music preview or if i've seen others play it on video or lots of people post scores on it
i missed out on a lot probably |

Re: Stepmania confession
SMOC has different definition of fun than ours. The main problem is that they have an unspoken rule where every song needs to be charted with every difficulty, regardless of how much is going on with the song. This often results in awful hand/quadgluts and questionable jacks throughout the whole song that doesn't even match any melody or sounds whatsoever. We do have this thing called jack theory and we do believe that properly placed jacks are fun to play, but if literally every chart available to you is vertex true gamma, the bar raises significantly and you can't be satisfied with tinny bits of jacks, then you keep asking for more and more ridiculous charts.

@Leonid: And this is exactly the problem of StepMania, sometimes stepwriters don't properly determine the stream of arrows needed for lower/higher difficulties. Because of this the real difficulty doesn't match the expected difficulty (colour and amount of feet) Then you've also got quirky lower difficulties which look like a random stripped version of the higher difficulties. (And to be frank, I don't think StepMania has standards of difficulty...) Some steppers do this scaling the good way, however; they step the beginner level first and add more instrumental patterns progressively throughout difficulties. AAA : SM Blue logo version, I believe it is a modified version of AAA on FFR and has at least 4 difficulties, very well stepped. Victory - Bond : same story. Sounds of Life - Pendulum: with changing backgrounds and multiple difficulties. A real b**** I never got around to mastering. Anyone know these? Last edited by VickyFox; 04-27-2016 at 11:09 AM.. Reason: Made my explanation of the difficulty problem a bit clearer. |

Re: Stepmania confession
The only reason people don't step enough easy files is because most stepartists step to the difficulty they are comfortable with. Because most stepartists are avid players with higher still than most they tend to step on the harder end of the spectrum.

Simfiles are spawned by end users. There's no official recommendation or anything of the sort for how difficulties or ratings should work. The game itself has a bunch of different modes, which would all require their own standards. Not to mention, any peripheral or controller whose input is detected by the PC can be used to play the game. It's not at all feasible to cover all of this in an official manner, nor would it be useful. |

I remember when I used to make 8th note stream files just to appease my peasantry.
