I always think it's a very interesting process to see someone quell existential anxiety and to have connections with things beyond the physical, whether or not they exist. It has an incredibly strong psychological impact on the person's life and probably for the person, can save them from depression and anxiety. Is it rational? Probably not. But that's why I find it interesting; the root of issues with anxiety is usually because someone is totally locked in on the direness of the fear, and the reality of it being a possibility. Sometimes we HAVE to distract ourselves from reality in order to rid of our natural responses to it. Death is a huge example of that. I do envy believers, and I'll admit a large portion of inner suffering would be eased with a strong spiritual backbone in my day to day life. It's not going to happen, but I know it's something that would be a fix for it (it's not like that's an easy thing to do. If I wanted to do it because of it's impact on my life, and not for reason as I gather things, then I'd be a believer).

I say that something being controversial isn't the reason people aren't interested in this and you quote me and say that you are interested in it. |

Re: Freedom of Speech in Chit Chat
The quote I mentioned says that it's not worth our time to talk about and I disagreed. I don't think controversy has much of a context in this, that's what you think most people perceive the subject with. That has only risen because of how hostile we tend to be on the subject matter for those who DO speak of it.

Re: Freedom of Speech in Chit Chat
Smartest post in this thread.
Threads like those have about a 2% chance of success, and that number can go way up or way down depending on how strictly the subforum is moderated. When trolls and other jackasses know that they can't get away with posting crap the thread will live or die on its own merit, and those who want to engage the OP can. If there aren't strictly enforced subforum rules, though, threads like that should be mercifully locked ASAP. --Guido |

Re: Freedom of Speech in Chit Chat
Maybe if you [Arkuski] wished upon a Religion Sub-forum, it might come to fruition.
However, we all know how long it took to get a Sports Sub-forum. |

A religion subforum would never happen. Should never happen.

Re: Freedom of Speech in Chit Chat
I find people who like to shove their lack of religion down other people's throats to be just as annoying as people who like to shove their non-lack of religion down other people's throats I don't understand people that go out of their way to be "active atheists"

By active atheists, I don't mean the type that are comfortable enough to speak about their lack of theistic beliefs. I moreso mean the type that go out of their way to either prevent or make difficult the safe and non-harmful religious practices of others. |
