Re: The Speedrunning Thread
Wait, in Vertigo, why didn't you need to collect all the eggs?

Re: The Speedrunning Thread
In advanced mode you have to. In non advanced mode only need to collect eggs in last lvl. I speedran advanced mode and got a pretty good score but never uploaded it to yt. Wanted a better run :P

Re: The Speedrunning Thread
I always find it interesting how speedrunners adopt different strategies if they're performing live and/or they're doing a single-segment run. Of course, with Exo's 18:39 any% of Super Meat Boy (featuring a perfect Larrie's Lament, made all the more amazing by the fact that you can't manipulate him into jumping) this wasn't really the case, but still. With single segment runs, the focus is on finding ways to do things quickly with less chance of screwing it up big time, and with live runs I think the policy is to go for it once and then fall back on the safe route if you miss.
Since I've been playing a lot of the original Legend of Zelda recently thanks to the GBA port, I've been wondering exactly what goes into the art of RNG manipulation. Clearly, it varies from game to game, but the fascinating thing about the Zelda series is that due to the large number of times the RNG is called for enemy spawn locations in dungeons, even tool-assisted runners have a bitch of a time getting everything to line up perfectly. So what I'm wondering is this: What games have you tried to run in which luck played a significant role? Of course, luck is what separates a good run from a great run and a great run from THE RUN, but how much actual difference is there? |

RNG related events - easily 10 minutes it really varies run per run, but easily you could lose 10 minutes to bad RNG in a BT run. As a reference, my PB is a 3:07 with decent luck, but not the best. probably lost at least 5 minutes to RNG related stuff (so maybe a 3:02). The world record at the time was a 3:04. (it's a 2:59 for this category now, 2:54 with manipulated RNG at the beginning) |

Re: The Speedrunning Thread
I'm considering attempting to speedrun something, just because it looks like it could be fun to absolutely dominate the game by playing by it's own rules and doing everything the developers did not intend to happen.
The problem though is I don't know what I want to speedrun. I like playing ma games casually darn it! |

Racing games are a good start, I would think. Gets you into the mindset you need of shaving off every possible second and fraction thereof.
Otherwise, focus on a game you know inside and out. |

Re: The Speedrunning Thread
Used to have the world record for 5 or so Super Meat Boy levels. My savefile seems bunk now :C gonna try getting there again.

So apparently even Candy Box can be sped through. Here's a guy doing the whole thing in about 63 minutes.

At the end of every mission, you can select a number of cards depending on your ranking. The higher the ranking, the more card you can get. There are 6 cards to choose from with a ranking going from 0 to 3. Getting extra copies of cards can be nice, but some cards are vital, such as Wizard and MechaPult. And there's the Flayer Spawn's small chance of auto-killing any Mech monster and how Sol behaves in two of the missions. Yeah, SS'ing this game is a pain. D: |

Re: The Speedrunning Thread
Oh there's a speedrunning thread lmao
I haven't run anything in a while but I do still hold the Tony Hawk's Pro Skater any% WR at 5:31. I have plans to go for sub 5:10, but I'm not sure when I'll go back to it. And run sm64, johnny bazookatone, and snowboard kids 2 (when I feel like relaxing) http://www.twitch.tv/remedy1502/ My stream, but I mostly just play mario kart wii lately. Re: The Speedrunning Thread
double post for update + bragging
Bracket C winner was me, because i screwed over Chabo with a 70 coin duel Also destroyed Quarterfinal B, was worried about yashichi, but in the end i managed to bring him from 140 coins to 0 through 1 duel (also netting me the coin star at 310 coins max lolol). On the /very last turn/ i needed a 10 to hit a Boo star steal on yashichi to knock him out of the tourney, since he was the biggest threat. RNG clutch. worried the hell about neskamikaze though. semifinal is on thursday, kinda expecting Fasch to join us. I'm kinda worried about Chabo, since I've played him in brackets, and he definitely was able to overcome the input lag and get the mini-game star (duels won it for me), but idk. Through quarterfinals, it's kinda really easily becoming clear who's really in it or not. or it's just that they're getting lucky as hell lol |

Re: The Speedrunning Thread
Heh, just discovered this thread and I must say I'm a massive fan of speedrunning. I've been watching mainly Siglemic, Trihex and Cosmo for a while but have started watching Stelzig, Lee_SDA, CarlSagan and others. I've tried speedrunning myself but I'm not good enough lol, but yeah I've got a stream channel for anyone whose interested.
http://www.twitch.tv/DanMeister1234 I've hardly speedran properly but as soon as I can get a good speedrun going, that would be awesome! XD
