As I said, bad timing for a claim like that. And your point about how it would only be more detrimental to him stands out.

Plus, going back, he was really surface level for activity and never even bothered to address the whole "xel is wolf" thing.

I feel like storn just got scared and felt he had to throw something out there to make us change our minds, so that was the "best option".
