Re: The Revolution is Here.
Less aggressive, more actually intelligent arguments, pl0x.
PS: gim·mick n. An innovative stratagem or scheme employed especially to promote a project: an advertising gimmick. How did Microsoft focus on the X-Box 360? The online play. How did Sony focus on the PS3? The insane power and graphics.

OK, now give me the connotation. I hate when people look up dictionary definitions for terms which are taken pretty much out of context and adapted with a connotation for a certain effect. Most people use gimmick to mean that it's simply a scheme, or a one time thing, to get people to play. In fact, even that doesn't make much sense. It's my assertion that 98% of the people who use this word have no idea what it means. But obviously they aren't using it with it's denotation, as gimmick is almost always carries a negative connotation when it comes to video games. I do, which is why i've said "if you're going to call the Revolution controller a gimmick, you must also call every controller a gimmick." But really, that dictionary definition doesn't fit into anything anyone has said in this thread, which is why I hate when people do it. EDIT: Basically I'm saying you'll NEVER see someone on a video game forum call online play a gimmick, or graphical prowess a gimmick, when maybe they should, therefore it can be understood that when the word gimmick is used, it's always referring to a connotation, which it seems is almost always undefined. EDIT 2: So essentially I'm looking for the people who recently called it a gimmick to 1.) tell me what they mean by it, or 2.) explain why exactly the Revolution controller is a gimmick.

Re: The Revolution is Here.
I was just stressing that there's really nothing gimmicky about the controller; it's just the main selling point of the console. The reason people always call it a gimmick is cuz it's less traditional and more silly seeming than the other two. If you think about it, basing a system or game around purely awesome graphics (which is retardedly common these days) is REALLY silly. It's what a lot of people want, though, so it's accepted. Nobody asked for what Nintendo is giving us. Maybe later on, because of the Rev, people WILL demand crazy controllers, but for now it just seems weird cuz it was unexpected.
I will say this, though: game who take advantage of special controllers because they feel they have to really annoy me. I haven't owned a Gameboy since GB Color, but I play the displays in Best Buy here and there. I liked the old WarioWare, before the DS, a lot. When I played the DS version that was ENTIRELY BASED AROUND THE TOUCHSCREEN, I was really annoyed by it. It wasn't fun and it was kinda annoying. I expect there will be lots of gimmicky games that will focus less on actual gameplay and more on "how can we force the player to use the new controller?" Once that first wave of crap comes out and everybody realizes they're retarded for making games like that, THEN the good games will come out. Basically: I expect the Rev games will suck at first, but as developers get good at making games that use the controller (but not OVERuse) the games will start to own completely.

They renamed it. http://revolution.nintendo.com/ Quote:
~Squeek Edit: And now people hate Nintendo over a NAME. Holy freakin crap modern-day people are just idiots. Sure, don't insult the fact that the 360 indicates progress that ends up right back where it started or Sony's method of just console++;ing everything. I hate other people online. Re: The Revolution (Wii) is Here.
It's not like people actually care about a dumb name, they just want to have something to bitch about.
And hey, the more people that bitch, the more often people will be exposed to the system. gj nintendo? |

Re: The Revolution (Wii) is Here.
Nintendo totally did it right. It's just a shame that so-called "gamers" fail to see how awesome this is. But eh, they unknowingly force the marketing scheme to succeed, so go them!
I know I'll be calling up a few friends to tell them the news in case they missed it. Every college in the country is going to know about this. That's a lot of gamers to suddenly be turned onto what Nintendo is doing. ~Squeek PS - Anyone who posts "LOL WII MEANS PEE ROFL" gets a ban from me. I'm already sick of this crap among gamers. It's one of the most childish and totally unoriginal arguments against a name that has ever come out of gamers in years. Last edited by Squeek; 04-27-2006 at 02:03 PM.. |

Re: The Revolution (Wii) is Here.
Just came in to rename my thread, but it seem Squeek beat me to it.
Shocked at first, already getting used to it. There are so many cool taglines that can be used, and that flash animation was great...They just need some SOLID marketing...

Re: The Revolution (Wii) is Here.
Well that surely was unexpected.
Nobody is not going to get the Wii just because it changed its name. Sure some people hate the name change, but whether or not they are going to enjoy it or get it is not going to be any different.

LOLOL WII MEANS PEE!
k, I felt like doing that because Squeek told me not to rofl. Btw, Wii looks a lot fscking cooler on a console than XBOX 360 gg to when it comes out and everyone's like: "Hey, look, nintendo finally released 'wii'" "Wanna go buy one because it's relatively cheap for a console and we'll have more of a reason to bash it?" "Yeah, sure why not" 10 minutes into play: "WHAT THE HELL WERE WE THINKING?!?!" "HOLY **** THIS IS AWESOME!" "Time to post like hypocrites on joystiq, but still seem like ******s that know what we're talking about" |

Holy crap that name sucks. Nintendo Revolution was fine. Well, it's just a name. I'm just interested in what will be revealed at E3.
Let's all hope Iwata comes in and says "'wii' were j/k, it's staying as the Nintendo Revolution rofl you noobs actually believed us." Publicity +10, Nintendo gains a level!

Well, think about it. It will receive more publicity because of the name change, because people don't really understand it. I personally like it. It's just fun to say.
WII!

I just think Wii doesn't sound as good as Revolution.
I mean, say them out loud to yourself. Wii. Revolution.

Re: The Revolution (Wii) is Here.
But while Revolution sounds cool as a name, it doesn't really make the system sound as distinct as it should be. Like Playstation 3 and Xbox 360. Yeah, they have a ring to it, but they sound too similar, in the sense that most products try to sound modern.
Sure, it will sound a bit weird at first; but it'll catch on. Nintendo's maverick ways have always sparked interest in the community. On a sidenote, for some reason I think the Revolution is similar to the iPod. O_o

Re: The Revolution (Wii) is Here.
I thought the same thing, Eyoshi... and apparently we aren't the only ones. It's the simplistic feel to the marketing, and the white background with grey simple-but-nice-looking text... and having everything so smooth. It's very Apple-esque.
I for one am already tired of people going nuts complaining already. Give it some time; people complained about the "Gamecube" name too, and now no one gives it a second thought.
