Does a Better Hertz Monitor give a slight advantage over FFR?
Quick Question
Does a better Hertz monitor make you better at the game? 60hz (what I use) is probably the worst right, but having a judge offset makes it better. To be honest I find that people that are good at the game use 144 hz or 240 hz. Can I also ask what is your monitor Hz at and what division are you? I'm a simple low tier division 2 but I'm gonna practice. Is having a high hertz monitor considered cheating? |

Re: Does a Better Hertz Monitor give a slight advantage over FFR?
I'm D6 with 59-60hz and I do believe I'm just flipping a coin for certain AAAs. I don't believe I would get D7 with a 144hz+ monitor, but I do think I could move up to lvl93~94 for the simple reason that the gameplay is more smooth and it's going to cut a part of the random goods due to occasional choppiness.
It's worth trying, but I would need to adapt to it as well to really tell how much it can help. |

As long as one person's hands are entering the inputs on a keyboard and the judgements of those inputs are not made more lenient than standard settings, you can do whatever the hell you want lol
Steroidmanias anyone?? also old shitty 60fps monitors work best btw, at least they do with sm3.9 and legacy ffr engines Last edited by Dynam0; 08-14-2017 at 12:09 PM.. |

the real secret no one wants you to know is that the pro players actually use dance pads as well as a keyboard, for extra key taps per second

120hz w/ lightboost gave me a large skillboost when I got it and 60hz looks horrible now

I've always used a 60. Just bought a 144, and I don't notice a difference.

Re: Does a Better Hertz Monitor give a slight advantage over FFR?
having more hertz doesn't really matter all that much. only thing it does is make the notes move along the screen more smoothly. I can see this making a difference with higher scroll speeds and more dense files, but at lower skill levels it shouldn't really matter. FPS can be a bigger factor than simply how many hertz you got. more frames mean you have more chances to hit the note within the note timing. of course more frames means screen tearing which can be helped by having more hertz on your monitor.
so really, it COULD help, and i would get a better monitor if you can, but its most certainly not required to be "good". |

Re: Does a Better Hertz Monitor give a slight advantage over FFR?
I honestly think it is more on a case-by-case basis. I always found 60Hz no problem at all on FFR. Different people have different reactions to higher refresh rates. Since I play at high scrolling rates, I find higher refresh rates easier on the eyes due to a smoother experience.
On SM, I could argue for higher refresh a bit considering I can actually see each's note's general image as it's refreshing on the screen and that bothers me immensely in dense note patterns, esp in clusterfuck JS/HS. TBH, what you should be MORE worried about/focused on is the response rate of your monitor as that can be far impacting than the refresh rate. It's not hard to adjust timings to counterbalance response rate but it's still a pain, imo. Quote:
But I also don't play FFR anymore soo~~~ |

Re: Does a Better Hertz Monitor give a slight advantage over FFR?
People who are good at the game have higher refresh rates because having a higher refresh rate is noticeable, can result in improvements due to it being noticeably different, and there's games for which a higher refresh rate is strictly better.
I firmly believe that FFR and Stepmania are not among them. While there's definitely something to be said for smoothness resulting in a better reading experience, rhythm games simple aren't "every millisecond matters" games, and far more is attributable to practice, audio cues, motor feedback, and chronoception combined than you could hope to gain by just slightly improving visual feedback.
