Default May 20: Solar Eclipse Visible in Asia and Western United States

http://news.yahoo.com/china-japan-us...223803360.html

Quote:
At sunrise in some parts of China and Japan and by sunset in the western United States, a partial solar eclipse is set to slink across a narrow swath of the Earth on May 20 and 21.

Depending on where people are in the eclipse's path, some may be able to witness an annular eclipse in which the moon blocks out all but a ring of the Sun's light.

Others will see the Sun as a crescent, partially obscured by the moon, for a period of around four to five minutes.

The event will be the first time in 18 years that such an eclipse is visible from the continental United States, according to Fred Espenak, a longtime solar eclipse expert with NASA.
Ugh...another reason I hate living in the Eastern coast. I would have LOVED to see this firsthand - I've seen a few lunar eclipses (one in 2007 when I was living in Las Vegas and another in 2010 here) but I've never witnessed a solar eclipse with my own eyes before. So, are any of you people living on the West Coast (and perhaps FFR'ers living in Asia!) gonna take pictures? I'd love to see what you guys capture.

I'm especially jealous seeing as how solar eclipses very rarely happen here - the last total eclipse we had was in 1979, and we won't see another until 2017...they happen much more frequently in Asia and Africa. I greatly look forward to seeing that eclipse in five years' time, but until then whoever is living on the West coast should share any pictures they take. Until then, any other discussion on the subject would be welcome.

Unfortunately, I don't have a camera right now, but I'm thinking about picking up a cheap digital camera for general usage. This is another good reason to get one lol

protip: don't look directly at the sun during the eclipse, there's some kind of cheap setup you can make that looks at it for you and projects something onto white paper so you can see how far along it is or some shit like that.

Other than that, those of you in the area hit up your local observatory or science museum, I'm sure they'll have more information.

It's in the Upcoming events section in my Astronomy thread; I'll be further west in a camping trip when this happens. I will see it happening while the sun sets, so you'll definitely get a photo or 10 from me, weather permitting.

Thanks for the thread Bynary and revealing this to more people. I was going to make one later in the day, you surely beat me to it. :P

If you are not in the shaded regions, you will be able to see (part of) this annular eclipse.
