Re: How to solve a Rubik's Cube
This thread would be worth it if even one person went in not knowing and came out knowing how to do it. Come on non-cubers! 6 algorithms, none of which are hard to memorize.

Re: How to solve a Rubik's Cube
Bump. It seems like these cube things are more popular these days than they were back in March 2009, so instead of creating a new thread, I'll just bump this one.
Plus, it's a pretty bitchin tutorial (no modesty). I might create a 4x4/5x5 guide if this thread gets a better response. Maybe a 2 look OLL/PLL tutorial as well. Sorry if you think this bump was unnecessary, but it will die again in a week if it doesn't get a good response anyway..

Re: How to solve a Rubik's Cube
This is a great guide, shows exactly how I learned to solve my first rubiks cube. a 4x4 guide would be fantastic.

Re: How to solve a Rubik's Cube
I was wondering what the hell this 2 look OLL/PLL is because I never heard of it before, so i decided to look it up, and I discovered that I do a 2 look OLL. I thought I was just being lazy lol.

This looks like the Dan Brown method with a couple of modifications.
Second vote for 4x4 tutorial. Yay for new notation and really long parity error algorithms. |

Re: How to solve a Rubik's Cube
There's some parity in 5x5 as well when resolving some of the outer dedges. Sorry.
Still fun to know how to do tho. Comes in handy when you're stuck in the car for 3 hours. @Fuzen: You can't do OLL unless you're planning on doing a PLL :O. Orienting the top layer serves no purpose in the beginner method. I made a video tutorial on 2-look OLL/PLL but it got like 14 views total, so I took it down lol. It's the method I use and it's pretty damn fast, and you only need to learn around 10 algorithms instead of 65 :P

I vote that this be stickied. Good job, rushy.

Re: How to solve a Rubik's Cube
i know to expect some parity in a 5x5 but theres not as much as in a 4x4 from what iv seen, i also vote a tutorial for a 2x2, i can do it but it would be amusing just to see one

Re: How to solve a Rubik's Cube
2x2 is intuitive and can be solved with extreme ease if you know the 2 look PLL/OLL method.

Re: How to solve a Rubik's Cube
idk solving 2x2 with pure intuition is extremely difficult imo

Re: How to solve a Rubik's Cube
if you can solve a 3x3, you can solve a 2x2. All the2x2 is is a 3x3 without the middle and edges.
There's no "special 2x2 only" algorithms iirc

Re: How to solve a Rubik's Cube
i said 'pure intuition'
using "algorithms" or any sort of that related to solving a 3x3 to solve 2x2 is not 'intuitive.' |

Re: How to solve a Rubik's Cube
Besides, many 3x3x3 algs are inefficient on the 2x2x2 cubes because they have to take more pieces into account depending on the nature of the algs (for instance, consider an orientation alg for a 2x2x2 that would screw up edges on a 3x3x3).
Algs for a NxNxN cube will always work for a (N-1)x(N-1)x(N-1) cube, but they'll be inefficient. |

Re: How to solve a Rubik's Cube
Just saying, if you play with a 2x2 for 10 minutes, you'll probably get it solved, you don't NEED to use any algs. I have family members who have solved my 2x2, never having picked one up before in their lives.
3x3 is the lowest I'm going with tutorials.

Re: How to solve a Rubik's Cube
Either that family member is very good at puzzles or you didn't scramble your cube much.
A 2x2 cube has a large enough number of possible states to not be solved in 10 minutes of randomly twisting layers. |

Re: How to solve a Rubik's Cube
My way of learning how to solve one was youtube. I am definetly a visual leaner. Then when I memorize the motions I can solve the cube faster because while my hands are doing the algorithim I can look ahead and know whats next to do or locate a piece that I will need next. I cant wait for Christmas because my parents will probably get me the 11x11x11 and the Teraminx (I am buying the Teraminx though)!
