the universe is empty
i was reading previous post about the universe and it remined me of this..
it is known that there are an infinite number of worlds, simply because there is an infinite amount of space for them to be in. however, not every one of them is inhabited. therefore, there must be a finite number of inhabited worlds. and any finite number divided by infinity is as near to nothing as makes no odds, so the average population of all the planets in the universe can be said to be zero. from this it follows thats the population of the whole universe is also zero, and that any people you meet from time to time are just the product of a deranged imagination. hitchhikers guide to the galaxy. very good book. i recommend this if you enjoy british humor and scifi. and if your not a reader the movie is coming out soon |

RE: the universe is empty
This is probably a bit too serious of a response, but: there is infinite space, but not infinite planets. Therefore, we have a finite number of inhabited planets of a finite number of total planets (there is a mass limit to the universe which is calculable) all within an infinite emptiness. The puzzle breaks down when you realize there are not infinite planets.

RE: the universe is empty
Except because we DO exist and DO have at least a brain on a physical or non-physical realm (we exist - we can't disprove that we don't), there is a definite populus in the Universe.
Even if the Universal population was small in comparision to the number of planets, and you divided the two, there may be less than 1 person per planet, but there is still existence. Mathematically, there may be only 0.0000000001 person per planet, but it's definitely not 0.000. But to think we're the only inhabited planet is extremely arrogant.

Once again, Drac hit the nail on the head.
Finite planets will correspond to a non zero answer in your calculation. Also, NEVER EVER EVER bring HHGTTG into CT.
