Here's a wonderful example of how bad it can suck sometime. This is a log of me messaging myself on AIM. Take a note of the times.

My connection sucked last year but has improved somewhat this year.
At least this year I can let AIM idle for over 10 minutes without it disconnecting itself. And I have yet to have any <500 bps downloads this year.

I know what you mean, DLing anything at 25MB/s really is terrible, I mean who wants to wait less than a minute for a 700MB DivX rip?
