Default DnB Test

Was trying out some DnB. This is what I got in under 20 minutes of work. If anyone would like me to finish this song / attempt more DnB, tell me. (Just want to know if this is my style, I'm constantly trying to find my own unique style...)

Sounds half-decent for a first shot. Don't run away with too many of these "tests" though.

Here are some tips:
-Always have a melody, supporting instrument(s), and bassline, and avoid using what I like to call a "false bassline." A false bassline is when the melody tends to have a fair amount of low notes, making it seem like there's a bassline.
-Find a few friends who are musically skilled and/or producers themselves and send your test-runs to them in addition to asking advice. Personally, I think I bug the **** out of KgZ and /DJS\, but they don't have the heart to say it.
-I like the fact that you're trying to find your own style, but (while I'm not making reference to the test you just posted) remember not to sacrifice the music quality for it.

Well, as you can see, I post on newgrounds, and I DO know a few people on newgrounds, but the only problem is that I don't know any DnB artists personally, I AM trying to contact some though. Also, would you be able to detail your explanation of the "fake bassline" and whatnot? It's a bit confusing.

Thumbs up Re: DnB Test

I suppose i make drum and bass, It's more IDM / breakcore though .. closer to flashbulb and Aphex, than Someone like Pendulum or DJ fresh

I left you a post in the newgrounds forum

P.S: i'm sure KGZ and DJS hate everyone equally Texan don't feel too bad.

Someone told me that my song is more Breakbeat than DnB. Is that true?

Why "always"? Do you like to paint by numbers, or what?

Why avoid it? That can be used to amazing effect if done well.

Are you implying that radical originality is a negative artistic attribute?

I like the first 10 seconds infinitely more than the last 10 seconds of it.

A good example is "Still Wasted" by Korsakoff.

That's the way that I interpreted the advice that KgZ gave me.

No. I'm saying that if he tries to create somewhat of a style that doesn't please his audience, that's a big no-no.

That is his purpose of posting here, along with many other artists including myself: To appeal to an audience.

Not necessarily. He could be trying to perfect a genre he's new to, but that doesn't necessarily mean he wants the audience to be pleased by it. He's looking for feedback on his song to make it better- better doesn't always mean that he's just trying to make people like his music.

Though it could.

I'm sorry bro, I can't agree with you on this one. The only person I'm honestly interested in appealing to is myself. I am always overjoyed when someone else likes my music. But that's not why I do it. The reason i post on here is to get advice as far as production goes, not to change my style or conform to a specific genre. All the advice I get here I take with a grain of salt, because you've got to understand that different people have different tastes in music.

For myself i prefer the more down trodden melodies. whereas someone like KGZ has more upbeat music.

I don't particularly like KGZ's music.. but I can absolutely recognize that he is an amazing producer.

But my god, I could never give him any tips on "his" genre.. because that's what it is... " his"

Just as KGZ couldn't tell me how to make IDM or Breaks.

You need to define your own style and then if you so choose, label it under the genre that it best fits.

That's very true. I'm just exploring different styles to see if some come more naturally to compose than others.

I still don't know what this is!

But at that point, without any boundaries, you can make a track saying it's a DnB Track, or a Trance Track and tell people that it's a classical piece or a Rap song. Clearly people will know the difference, but the fact is, like you said, you can make a red squiggle on a piece of paper and call it a dragon... why not make a rap song and call it trance?

That's exactly how I feel at this point.

THANK YOU! I'm just looking for tips on how to make it better. Not to make it someone else's, change it completely.

I'm hoping so too! Especially after that remix, I'm learning a bunch of new techniques. I've realized, that for FLS7, the main thing is "Automation Clips".
