For Merzbow, I originally was going to suggest doing Tauromachine, Venereology or Pulse Demon. Then I realized they're all clipping themselves to death...and considering the kind of music he makes, that was most likely intentional.

Pulse Demon is a really good entry point for Merz if you've ever encountered harsh noise before it, but honestly I would've gone for Merzbeat. it's the closest thing he's ever released to something with a normal time signature lmao

Yeah. I will try to avoid repetition and not repeat myself on this one ...

I don't know how people will look at Scurrilous in 5-10 years : an album sandwiched between two greater albums or the overlooked precursor to a well received change in style. I see it as a logical bond in their discography. It possesses all the elements of American progressive metalcore (let's call it that way) ; talented musicians, strong musicianship, fast tempos, catchy choruses, complex time signatures, etc. The main thing lacking, is a specific direction. I had the impression the album was only made to showcase their skills. Honestly, I could say that for every album they have made, but Scurrilous is just more evident to me. Tandem comes out as the best song here. Overall, it's their worst LP but it's solid material anyway.

A total mess of an album. But a likeable mess. It started great with a couple of awesome stoner/sludge songs. The first song, Hooch, might be their most known and for a good reason. The demented screams and the guitar solos on Night Goat are a highlight. Honey Bucket has some very typical thrash metal riffs, but is unfortunatly too short. Followed by a few slower sludgish songs : Hag Me, Joan of Arc - also Joan of Arc ends abruptly in a bizarre cut. Then, there's three more experimental songs that add nothing for me. Sky Pup has a cool bass line, accompanied with annoying vocals. At least, it's better than Spread Eagle Beagle. 10 minutes of random banging sounds, a waste of time. Pearl Bomb has a very annoying ticking sound, but again, the bass saves the song. Nice amount of diversity but inconsistent to no end.

It's really apparent how much grunge has had an impact on them. In fact, Kurt Cobain produced 6 songs on the album, and was fired because "he was out of control". Good move honestly, except Hooch, he produced the worst songs on the album.

A hard to classify album by ex-member of Freezepop Kasson Crooker. It shares a bit of different genres, pop influenced female vocals, sometimes a gloomy industrial ambiance, glitch effects and parts of Disbeliver, Do Not Conceal Disbelief in Your Soul are mostly breakbeat. It's reminiscent of The Postal Service althought less beat-driven and relies more on atmosphere, subtle melodies and build-ups. The album is nicely structured. It opens with the most accessible songs and slowly darken in mood. Beyond Orion's Arm is filled with beautiful melodies and the harmony between the chords and the vocals is perfect. Another good moment appears between track 7 and 8. The beginning of Self-Destruct & Self-Destroyed decelerates while Disbeliever... speed up. Interesting effect and nicely executed. Kasson's vocals distract me as they were slightly boring, if not anti-climatic. I would prefer an instrumental version of this album.

Great review, there actually is an instrumental version of the album, Misery in Soliloquy Exposed. Some songs are different (you can hear stereo diffed vocals in Beyond Orions Arm, extra synths in Self Destruct and Self Destroy, etc)

It does the job I guess. I'm really not fond of vocaloid vocals but they aren't as much prominent as I originally thought. They are present in about half of the songs. The symphonic elements are the best aspect of the music, and they get mixed with more glitchy effects here and there. When there's metal riffage (HypnoSpirA or Catastrophe), it's even better. Finally, you have Existence, a typical above average brostep song that feels out of place.

To be honest I kinda liked the curve ball that was Existence. First time I heard it I was like "WAIT THERE'S DUBSTEP ON THIS?!" But it's really well done. I'm kinda surprised you didn't even mention the first track. I also can't even pick a personal favorite off this album.

Organic glitchy goodness from Sora (birth name is Takeshi Kurosawa - not to confuse with the clothing line Takeshy Kurosawa). The type of music you can put as subtle background noise. When you listen to it actively, it's rewarding due to its complexity. It therefore creates an interesting duality. The more active songs are slightly better and more engaging. The sudden stops in Pause are demanding and the grinding sound effects in La Cathédrale Engloutie hurt by their loud resonance. Ravuela (ii) and Traces are the most rhythmic songs (thanks to the jazz drumming) and at the same time, are the best of the album.
