Under temporary halt on updates until a few days after 11/17. Feel free to keep posting.
Welcome to the FFR Player's Handstyles List: Updated to post #283
First off, I would like to link you all to the FFR Playing Style and Hand Position Guide (http://www.flashflashrevolution.com/vbz/showpost.php?p=1946948&postcount=1) by Zageron. It will tell you the basics of the various playstyles on FFR. This thread is only designed to list who plays what style. Both our threads are still in the making process, so if the community would lend us a hand, we would be grateful. Suggest, Criticize, all that.
The list is divided into 6 categories based on the number of hands, and the number of fingers. These 6 categories are further divided if there are common names for certain kinds of playstyles (spread, index etc.). If you haven't done so already, SUBMIT PLEASE!
Purposes
-get the general sense of what styles are used most often
-be able to find new users who share the same style you do
-discover radical and inventive styles to make FFR challenging and fun
-possibly weed out unknowing newbies who are playing double setup
-DO NOT START PLAYSTYLE FLAME WARS. Informative statements are welcome, but not aggressive ones.
Note:
-only submit one (your main) playstyle, unless if you use one as much as the other.
-don't use shift/capital letters/symbols.
-if you change your playstyle, say so
-don't state any "i used to play..." or "i will learn..."
-multiple styles will only be admitted if you can get relatively decent scores with both styles OR the style is extremely difficult/uncommon (no "I will get better/I used to".)
-keys and fingers always come in ←↓↑→ order
-differentiate between numpad and keyboard numbers by saying num2 instead of 2
-for arrow keys, use ←↓↑→
-when submitting finger placement with multiple keys for one finger, state both directions before the assigned finger (↓↑ R index)
-when submitting finger placement with multiple fingers for one key, separate the fingers with a slash (LR index) (R index/middle) (L index/R middle)
How to submit: Easiest way is to just state a different username on the list that has the same style as you do.
If you don't find anyone like that:
simple format (for those that belong in a pre-existing subsection)
name linked to FFR Profile [key format] subsection name
detailed format (for those that have new/uncommon styles)
name linked to FFR Profile #hands #fingers [key format] (finger placement) links to details if necessary
Examples:
dooty 7 (http://www.flashflashrevolution.com/vbz/../profile/dooty_7/) - qqwref
Xx{Midday}xX (http://www.flashflashrevolution.com/vbz/../profile/Xx%7BMidday%7DxX/) - [z x . /] index middle spread
Infinity. (http://www.flashflashrevolution.com/vbz/../profile/Infinity./) - 24 [← ↓ ↑ →] (L index, LR index, L index/middle, R ring) details (http://www.flashflashrevolution.com/vbz/showpost.php?p=2405458&postcount=8)
They will appear as listed below.
Now I would like to stress stuff here. I'm not going to be available as often, with my violin concerto, my trip to Japan, and the moving within NY that's happening. At this rate of submission, there probably will be quite a few when I come back after being gone for a good week or so.
I want all following submissions to follow the following.
POST YOUR NAME WITH YOUR PROFILE LINK
TRY TO FIND SOMEONE ON THE LIST THAT HAS THE SAME SETUP AS YOU DO
IF NOT, FIND A SUBSECTION YOU BELONG IN, BUT STATE THE SLIGHT DIFFERENCE WHETHER IT IS A KEYMAP OR FINGER PLACEMENT
IF NOT, STATE THE KEYS YOU USE, AND THE HAND/FINGERS YOU USE IN THE CORRECT ORDER (LEFT DOWN UP RIGHT)
I don't want to have to deal with subtle implications and inadequate information on my own thread after a stressful week.
I thank you all in advance for your cooperation.
PS: Please get more submitters =) We got to 100+ pretty fast! Quite content. I hope this rate will keep up.

Improvements
I would like to add the following:
How to:
-screencut
-zoom
-enlarge (arrekusu93's script)
-set speedmod
-set scroll
-set modfiers
-glossary
-keymap (with as much keyboard info as possible)
Speedmod
-SM cmod
-FFR xmod
-screencut/window size
-alt account difference
Modifiers
-FFR mods
-SM mods
-alt account difference
Scroll
-general scroll
-alt account difference
The alt account difference will encourage people to try out new settings on alt accounts, and try to record accomplishments with these new settings.
User list data
-username
-handstyle
-scroll
-speedmod
-additional mod
What do you think? Yes, this will take an ENORMOUS amount of time to efficiently organize, but I'm willing to do it so long as people submit、and yes, the submitting will become tedious too.
If I add all of these things to this thread, I would like the thread title to be changed to something more suitable, and I would like this to be stickied.

I think this is right, the instructions for submitting kind of confused me:
Commandersa1 - 2 hands 4 fingers: [Left/Down arrow keys, 8/6 on num pad (L Ring, L Middle, R Middle, R Ring)
iluswirl
07-28-2008, 01:34 PM
Well. I guess I have to say that I now play spread. Wasn't that way a week ago.. But yeah.
iluswirl - 24 [a s k l] (L middle, L index, R index, R middle) spread
Xx{Midday}xX

Submissions don't have to be perfect, so long as I get the info I need.
Corrected:
Commandersa1 - 24 [← ↓ num8 num6] (L Ring, L Middle, R Middle, R Ring) spread
Made it less confusing.

It would be most appreciated if we can expand the list through signature advertisement (link is on my sig). The list is really worthless unless if we get most of the active users on the site.
I'm going to assume that the first thread failed because:
terrible organization - i solved that im sure.
no participation - maybe my submission format is still complicated?
=(
I see a lot of people just passing through this thread without submitting. I wonder what could be the problem?

Ok, I'll post this again.
Tbh, looking back at my previous post a year ago, I'll clarify my hand style...
I have TWO hand styles, for different types of files.
Two hands - 3 fingers (← L middle, ↓↑ L middle/L index/R middle, → R middle) : For easy KB files AND files with LOTS of streams (no jump streams though). Accuracy is high for MA/PA and FCs.
Two hands - 4 fingers [spread] (← L middle, ↓ L Index, ↑ R index, → R middle) : For HARD KB files (especially those with jump streams). Accuracy is pretty low, but used for FCs. I barely use this style though.
But on the list put the first one on.
EDIT: Some extra details on my first style:
- AlWAYS used left middle finger for left arrow key, right middle for right key.
- Up used by the middle fingers, depending on pattern. I always alternate hands, so if the last arrow was pressed by my left hand and the next arrow is up, I press up key with my right middle finger, and vice-versa.
- For down arrow key it's the same thing as previous point, but instead of LEFT MIDDLE, it's LEFT INDEX.

Also, we usually lock "what style do you play" threads because there are just so many of them posted all the time. But this one looks sufficiently well organised and designed as an actual resource instead of "I play this awesome way I bet nobody else does" that chances are you may end up with a sticky, and then we can simply point all similar thread creators to this one.

A question to you all:
Would you consider 2 hand 4 finger (2 fingers from each hand) on the arrow keys (or something similar) as "spread"? I had the idea that spread had to have distance between the left and right hands. Arrow keys, and the like, have the hands on top of each other, so I haven't put them in spread. Thoughts?
If arrow key 2 hand 4 finger is spread, then I'll just put them under Hybrid or Index Middle Spread.
If arrow key 2 hand 4 finger is not spread, give me a name for them. I'll take several opinions first.

Nahh, I think that's like.. Cramped. not spread. I think of spread as spread "out". But I'm not a genius at that.. So I don't know.

I play the same way as Hammy, but with different left-hand keys.
I've always felt this to be more "natural". Because the tip of your middle finger is farther out than that of either the index or ring finger, it feels more natural to fit a middle finger with a ring finger on a key lower to the side (as it is on the hand) instead of bringing an index finger up to a key next to a middle finger.
Yeah. Really just coining the term "natural spread" as an alternative to "hybrid", but... yeah. "Hybrid" works just as well because different fingers are used on each hand.
Oh, also... I think this is also, like, a transition between 4-finger and Mid/Index spread. Because the Mid/Ring finger on the right hand fits right on the arrow keys, and the Mid/Index on the left hand fits under the right hand on the arrow keys. So "transitional" could work as a word for the style, too... aaand now I'm just kind or rambling.

Rambling is good input. But I'm sticking with Hybrid. Until some lefty version pops up, in which case I'll need a different name. But I have a question for hybrid players then. According to this, you're basing the natural-ness off the idea that you have to have your keys in the shape of the arrow key format. Hence your up is more distant than your right, hence you use middle ring to make it feel natural. Assuming that everyone has stronger index and middle, wouldn't it be easier to equalize the distance of up and right and play like index middle spread players?
Another Another Question: There seem to be many index middle spread players who use a s k l. Should I make another subsubsection for you guys?
I think anything using spread should stay in the same categorie, meaning:
ASKL, DFJK, QW[], ZX./, <v86 etc...
foilman8805
07-28-2008, 05:37 PM
askl is very common. About as much as zx./, I'd say. So if you're going to make one subsection, you may as well make a second.
EDIT: EnR is right. There's really no reason to split it up. Just keep it as one category.

Ok, but don't ask me, "How many people play [? ? ? ?]?" after 200 people are on the spread list. That's my primary concern. Unless if there's some fast counting method.
If you guys may want tallies for certain key formats in the future, I should make subsections for them. If you don't need such tallies, then I won't. Once again, unless if there's some fast counting method.

Xx{Midday}xX welcomes to the FFR player's Handstyles List
(Updated to post #85)
First off, for reference, I would like to link you all to the FFR Playing Style and Hand Position Guide (http://www.flashflashrevolution.com/vbz/showpost.php?p=1946948) by Zageron. It will let you in on the basics of the various playstyles on FFR.
This thread is specifically designed to list 'which' players play 'each' style. The list is divided into 6 categories based on the number of hands, and the number of fingers. These 6 categories are further divided if there are common names for certain kinds of playstyles (spread, index etc.).
Both threads are still under construction, so if the community would lend us a hand, we would be grateful. Please suggest, criticize, and all the works.
Purposes
Get the general sense of what styles are used most often
Be able to find new users who share the same style you do
Discover radical and inventive styles to make FFR challenging and fun
Possibly weed out unknowing newbies who are playing double setup
Note:
Please only submit your most used Handstyle, unless you are 100% positive that you use two styles the same amount.
If you have separate accounts for separate Handstyles, please submit the Handstyle on the alternate account and leave a reference to your main account name.
Keys and fingers always come in the regular order, "Left, Down, Up, Right" (←↓↑→).
Differentiate between numberpad and keyboard numbers by stating "num2" instead of "2".
When stating that you use arrow keys please use "←↓↑→".
When submitting finger placement with multiple keys for one finger, state both directions before the assigned finger (↓↑ R index)
When submitting finger placement with multiple fingers for one key, separate the fingers with a slash (LR index) (R index/middle) (L index/R middle)
How to submit:
Easiest way is to just state a different username on the list that has the same style as you do.
Save point --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Taking a break.
If you don't find anyone like that:
simple format (for those that belong in a pre-existing subsection)
[key format] subsection name
detailed format (for those that have new/uncommon styles)
#hands #fingers [key format] (finger placement) links to details if necessary
DO NOT FORGET TO STATE WHAT KEYS YOU USE
Examples:
dooty 7 (http://www.flashflashrevolution.com/vbz/../profile/dooty_7/) - qqwref
Xx{Midday}xX (http://www.flashflashrevolution.com/vbz/../profile/Xx%7BMidday%7DxX/) - [z x . /] index middle spread

I missed your post exactly at a page turn. (Page 1 became Page 2 directly after your post at that time, so I didn't see it).
You even added a supplementary and encouraging comment...
I'm sorry.
It's weird... I saw you looking at the thread on the name display at the bottom... and I was wondering why you didn't comment on a thread like this. I presumed this was pretty much trivial information to most FFRans... afraid of the lock. When I didn't find a post from you, I thought this was an ok thread.

Yeah Midday, the forum currently has a conflicting CSS problem between the forum header and the forum itself.
The header has the List style set to default as "none", and the forum uses "user choice" (or something like that). The header is overriding the forum list styles. So my version of the format doesn't work unless it's viewed as a single post.

I want to see how you classify my finger style.
Index (Indices only)/3 finger (Either L-index/L-middle/R-index or L-index/R-middle/R-index)/4 finger (indices and middles): YGHJ
Index Middle Spread: VB↑ →
Edit: My brother indexes YGHJ.
Xx{Midday}xX
07-30-2008, 12:29 AM
4 finger (indices and middles): YGHJ
Index Middle Spread: VB↑ →
What's the difference between 4 finger indices and middles, and index middle spread?
I can put you under all 4 styles if you want.
If you use them all in one song (switch mid-song), I can make a new section for adaptive playing. I remember you doing that for AIM Anthem, but if you do it generically for all songs that require adapting, then I'll make the new section.
MahouMinachan
07-30-2008, 12:30 AM
4-finger allows me to hit one handed trills two-handed or make awkward jumps less awkward. It's how I AAA'ed Aztec Templing.
Edit: I only switch during songs like AIM though...
Edit: I adapt if I have to. If you want to go ahead. But, most of the time, I don't switch.
Xx{Midday}xX
07-30-2008, 12:34 AM
I'll just put you under all 4.
Damn, I really need a separate number list now... =_=
EDIT: That's a sick way of playing. I can't even master spread, and you've like gotten 4 different playstyles down.
EDIT2: How does your middle finger take care of the down/up in your 3 finger play? Shouldn't index take care of down/up?
MahouMinachan
07-30-2008, 12:36 AM
It's a Jack of all Trades thing. I can do all of them, but I never master one of them.
Technically, yeah up/down are taken care of by the indices. But, I do use either middle finger on AIM for the up/down jacks.
I think the song I play the most traditional 3-finger is P4U v2...
benny6p12
07-30-2008, 01:33 AM

This list only represents the playstyle you use most.

Midday, I'm somewhat of a cross between two styles of spread. I use y, j, numpad8, numpad6... I guess that qualifies for diagonal spread more than anything else; I just reverse the diagonal position on my right hand from what the other diagonal players use. I would appreciate, though, if you marked me down for:
y, j, numpad8, numpad6
Xx{Midday}xX
07-31-2008, 04:21 AM
I am somewhat confused.
Reverse the position of the right hand?
Did you want me to put you in diagonal spread, or keep you separate?
-Yukari-
07-31-2008, 04:28 AM
The categorization is really your call. All the organization in this thread has been done by you, so... you decide what my playing style is. I think it counts as diagonal spread even though I reverse the position of the right hand. You know what I mean by that, right? Instead of playing a formation like l, p... I use a formation like numpad8, numpad 6... so the middle finger is the lower key, not the higher one.

TRY TO FIND SOMEONE ON THE LIST THAT HAS THE SAME SETUP YOU DO
IF NOT, STATE THE KEYS YOU USE, AND THE FINGERS YOU USE.
IF YOU DO NOT DO INDEX OR SPREAD, STATE WHAT FINGERS GO WHERE.
I don't want to have to deal with subtle implications and inadequate information on my own thread after a stressful week.
I thank you all in advance for your cooperation.

As Spammy said, the left hand is different (ring middle vs middle index). However, the official term for hybrid spread is fairly a new entity, so many people may refer to any spread that isn't index middle to be hybrid.
Should we have names for the 'misc' groups if enough players are gathered?
Yes, depends on which misc you're talking about. In the spread misc, no one is exactly the same. the key assignement is differently shaped, despite the synonymous (L index, R index, R middle, R ring) finger placement. However, if you wish to bunch you 3 up, then go ahead. I just need a name.

If you're talking about me, essentially it's traditional 2-handed, just with a slightly different key setup. I wouldn't exactly call it spread, because the arrows are touching. If I could be in Misc, that'd be cool, though.

Midday, could you explain the point of this thread? Unless it's just to give users an idea of what's popular, easy, etc., I see this thread as a bit pointless.
There is a purposes section that answers this.
Purposes
-get the general sense of what styles are used most often
-be able to find new users who share the same style you do
-discover radical and inventive styles to make FFR challenging and fun
-possibly weed out unknowing newbies who are playing double setup
If these purposes are pointless to you, then so be it. I see a point, hence I continue this thread. Some people agree, some people don't. Hence, I will do what I can to make this thread seem purposeful. I have devonin's support.
I hope it doesn't turn in to another, "I use one hand and I'm just as good as you, so actually I'm better than you" threads.
THAT is solely up to the community. It is of my concern that I continue with what I started this thread for, and so I will act accordingly if such disgust were to start in my thread. However, it is not I who starts such disgust, but the community. Tell the community, not me.

I respect this thread. I'm definitely not against it.
I still don't see the point to this thread, in that I don't think playing style is a large concern.
It certainly couldn't hurt to have something like this, though.
However, it's just a matter of time before this becomes a technique war. Index vs. Spread vs. One Hand, etc.
Xx{Midday}xX
08-10-2008, 08:12 PM
Devonin, 24 asjk index/middle spread
Also, we usually lock "what style do you play" threads because there are just so many of them posted all the time. But this one looks sufficiently well organised and designed as an actual resource instead of "I play this awesome way I bet nobody else does" that chances are you may end up with a sticky, and then we can simply point all similar thread creators to this one.
Here's the supportive statement... although I pissed him off by missing it the first time around... I still apologize for that.
I personally would like to see indexers make their own thread like the one handers did.
As long as the assertive people don't make aggressive statements when posting their playstyle, I think everything will be fine.
People who do make statements about their playstyle do it in peaceful and informative ways to give other people ideas about various playstyles. There's no aggression from those kinds of people.
Once an aggressive statement is made, all that we have to do is not retaliate with another aggressive statement. Just state that the statement was inexcusably rude, or if it gets too far, have a mod ban him.

Would someone like to get screenshots of the game settings? I can make a section on how to set keymapping/speedmods, or rather the whole setup itself.
Also, I plan to make a section on speedmods. Who plays what speedmod etc.
What do you think? If we incorporate SM, it may be hard to keep up with cmod values, but we can do it by range.

Also, for the screenshots of game settings, did you just want a picture of the game setting screen or a bunch of different things about it?

-set modfiers

-SM cmod
-FFR xmod
-screencut/window size
-alt account difference
Modifiers
-FFR mods
-SM mods
-alt account difference
Scroll
-general scroll
-alt account difference
The alt account difference will encourage people to try out new settings on alt accounts, and try to record accomplishments with these new settings.
AND LASTLY, I'd like to add:
User list data
-username
-handstyle
-scroll
-speedmod
-additional mod
What do you think? Yes, this will take an ENORMOUS amount of time to efficiently organize, but I'm willing to do it so long as people submit.
If I add all of these things to this thread, I would like the thread title to be changed to something more suitable, and I would like this to be stickied.

First of all I think we can keep the current style and implement modifiers and whatnot to it. Just have it display:

Although if you do go through with this you may want to change the thread name to playstyle instead of handstyle to avoid confusion :-D

This alone won't allow me to calculate the total number of people doing each kind of setting.
Hence, I made a separate username list on the bottom of my to do list on my previous post.
I want a list that totals the various settings, as well as individual username data.
Only reason finger placement and keymaps are together, is because they are related to each other.

I appreciate that you guys are trying to help me, but I think there's a misunderstanding...
Putting your profile link raw as a URL does not help me. I usually right click the avatar and copy the URL directly from there. Then I hyperlink the name and paste the URL in the script.
The tedious part is hyperlinking the name. Hence, if you hyperlink your name for me, all I have to do is copy paste the hyperlinked name. Posting the raw URL is no different to me than just having your avatar on the forums.
By hyperlinking your name, I can avoid:
-typing tedious names... (like classic rockers shift no shift etc. etc., or long names)
-hyperlinking
-rightclicking copying URL source and pasting into hyperlink script
All I have to do if you hyperlink your name:
copy and paste that linked name
Thank you all for your consideration.
I can't copy and paste your forum name because it leads to your forum profile. I have to relink it to the FFR Profile, which is even more tedious. (EnR did that I think, but np, I did it right.)
Why link your names in the first place? I'm not really sure myself, but the more information on an informative post, the better, right? You can communicate or comment on people's playstyles that way.
Example of what helps:

I usually play Numpad (4,2,8,6) but on a laptop I play ASKL. I prefer Numpad because I can easily PA left-handed trills by switching to semi-index. It's really hard to do that on ASKL.
