This is something I have been wondering about. Didn't come from anywhere so i doubt this question is very common

Lets say someone has a car crash somewhere and someone calls an ambulance. The ambulance is on the way there but halfway they witness another car crash. What should the ambulance do?

A) Go to their original victim and call another ambulance to aid the 2nd person. Lets just say this puts both victims at a 50% chance to survive.

B) Help the car crash they just witnessed, and call another ambulance to go to the original person or just go there afterwards. This would have the 2nd victim at a 75% chance to live and the 1st victim at 25% chance to live.

well damn. ive thought about this also at one point. pending on how bad the wreck is, normally more than 1 ambulence will go so i guess if 1 saw another wreck, theyd radio to the other one to let them know they are stopping for the new wreck and to get backup. thats my guess anyways

Definitely point A.
It would be their goal to give all parties the best possible hope of survival.

In general they'd do A, unless dispatch told them to do B.

my dad, who has been a firefighter-paramedic for 28 years, said that it would definitely be A. if the ambulance had an extra person with them, they may drop one paramedic off at the more recent site, but they would still call an extra ambulance themselves for the 2nd crash anyways

The ethical thing to do would be choose option A.

But, if you're looking at a person with a 50% chance of survival and one with a 75% chance of survival, which one would you choose? This is called a triage, what EMT's need to do when they come upon a scene.

Well yeah, A. Doing otherwise would be condemning the first person to death since that ambulance was probably the only one going to the first crash, so it's their responsibility to help the first victim and NOT their responsibility to help the second one.
