Drug test people on welfare?

Anyone hear about this new concept pushed forth in places like Florida recently? What do you think?

They're doing a drug test on all people on welfare in that area?

I fully support this. Welfare is for families who can't afford the basic nessecities, not drugs.

Anybody who supports this has obviously never lived on welfare and is most likely typing from a cookie cutter suburban home.

That being said, this is a horrible idea and seems malicious in my opinion. The idea disgusts me, but it is even more disgusting that people are supporting it. The poor are the ones who bear the brunt of our drug laws and this is just not necessary!

There are more important issues at hand!!!!

The people abusing the money (and don't try to act like nobody is abusing it, we all know that people do) need to be cut from welfare or have some of it cut at least. The government is basically paying for some people's drugs. That's why they're doing it.

A failed drug test is not an indicator of whether or not someone is abusing their welfare check. I'm sure there are plenty of people who abuse their welfare checks but will pass their drug tests. This targets people who participate in the black market.

There are much more efficient ways to cut government spending and this should be at the bottom of the list.

How is that malicious in any way? I know of a woman who is getting welfare right now. She get's food stamps, cash assistance, and rental assistance (they pay for an entire apartment for her) what does she do with the cash, she blows it on pot. Yea because that's what people on welfare need right? I'm sorry but if you have money to piss away on drugs, alcohol or tobacco then you don't need money from welfare. None of those 3 things is a necessity.

"Are people on welfare more likely to be substance abusers? Not by much, according to the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration.

Although I somewhat agree with this I think welfare should be 6 months of rent/groceries/necessary/transportation (metro passes etc), and after that 6 months you should be offered an option to be dropped off welfare or offered a minimum wage job with the government contributing to society.
