Drug test people on welfare?
Anyone hear about this new concept pushed forth in places like Florida recently? What do you think?

Re: Drug test people on welfare?
They're doing a drug test on all people on welfare in that area?
Is there a link to an article or something? |

Re: Drug test people on welfare?
don't they give food tickets at some places? kinda makes more sense rather than just give money that can be blatantly abused.

Re: Drug test people on welfare?
I fully support this. Welfare is for families who can't afford the basic nessecities, not drugs.

Re: Drug test people on welfare?
Anybody who supports this has obviously never lived on welfare and is most likely typing from a cookie cutter suburban home.
That being said, this is a horrible idea and seems malicious in my opinion. The idea disgusts me, but it is even more disgusting that people are supporting it. The poor are the ones who bear the brunt of our drug laws and this is just not necessary! There are more important issues at hand!!!! |

How is that malicious in any way? I know of a woman who is getting welfare right now. She get's food stamps, cash assistance, and rental assistance (they pay for an entire apartment for her) what does she do with the cash, she blows it on pot. Yea because that's what people on welfare need right? I'm sorry but if you have money to piss away on drugs, alcohol or tobacco then you don't need money from welfare. None of those 3 things is a necessity. |

Re: Drug test people on welfare?
"Are people on welfare more likely to be substance abusers? Not by much, according to the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration.
The administration, which is part of the Department of Health and Human Services, found that 9.6 percent of people living in households that receive government assistance used illicit drugs in the previous month, compared with a 6.8 percent rate among families who receive no assistance. The administration also found that heavy alcohol use was slightly lower in households receiving assistance than in those that do not. Michigan, the only state to have imposed random drug testing on welfare recipients, found that 10 percent tested positive for illicit drugs, with 3 percent testing positive for hard drugs such as cocaine. "These rates are consistent with the general population," according to the liberal Center for Law and Social Policy. — Alan Greenblatt" |

Re: Drug test people on welfare?
Although I somewhat agree with this I think welfare should be 6 months of rent/groceries/necessary/transportation (metro passes etc), and after that 6 months you should be offered an option to be dropped off welfare or offered a minimum wage job with the government contributing to society.

Re: Drug test people on welfare?
I agree with it.
If you can spend money on drugs you don't need welfare. Period in. |
