It's the day the Decleration of Independence was signed... we celebrate it on the 4th but it didn't actually happen then, it happend on the 2nd or 3rd. Not sure which.

July 1, 1867 was when the British North America Act was signed, making Canada a country. Canada Day is the anniversary of it.
