Re: Jury acquits escort shooter
Errr...biblical interpretation is super tricky and messy thing. A lot of things need to be considered for one to come to a reasonable interpretation. A list of things to keep in mind when interpreting the bible:
1. Interpret the bible in the light of its context. It's important to note what precedes and what follows the verse that one refers to. Also, chapter divisions don't necessarily serve as boundary lines. Sometimes the only way to appropriately interpret a verse is by reading the entire book that the verse is contained (and by "book" I don't mean the entire bible. The bible is divided into sections called "books") 2. Interpret the passage in the light of the words used. a. Some words don't mean the same as they did before in 1611 (like if you're reading the King James Version). b.Translation is a tricky and continually improving process. A lot of meaning is lost since the books of the bible were in Greek (with the old testament being written in mostly Hebrew). Sometimes it may serve useful to find the original passage in greek and do some word-by-word translation for yourself while also holding on to any connotation known for such greek words. c. Some words also don't mean the same to us as they did in biblical times d. Be aware of "spurious texts" where the earliest manuscripts don't contain certain passages but newer ones do. One shouldn't rely on such texts. e. Some words can be best understood by their roots f. Some words or phrases are biblicial idioms. g. Knowing or getting someone to help you with greek grammar helps you a long way (there's a lot of details here, but I don't want to elaborate atm) 3. Interpret the passage in the light of its historical and cultural background. Knowing historical facts, ways of life, common superstitions etc sometimes is needed to fully understand the passage. 4.Interpret difficult passages in the light of clear and simple passages on the same subject. In other words, let scripture interpret scripture. Sometimes trying to read a difficult passage that contains a lot of symbolism, historical context, idioms, and archaic words is difficult so sometimes it'd be better to try to read a simplier passage on the same topic so grasp a better understanding of what might be going on in the more difficult passage. The books of the bible tend to fall into a few categories so for this point, it's best to find a passage from didactic (or "teaching") books to explain figurative (poetic, symbolic) books. 5. Interpret the passage in the light of the entire Bible. 6. Interpret the passage in the light of the place it occurred in the progress of God's revelation. (This one is kinda confusing and mostly focuses on Old Testament vs New Testament stuff). 7. Interpret the bible in the light of the kind of literature it is. Explaining this one is one that would require an entire post in itself. 8. Interpret scripture in the light of Jesus. Jesus plays an integral role of many sectors of Christianity and a lot is done "through" him so this step is necessary if one wants to understand most Christian mindsets. The rest below only apply if have any belief in Christianity. Gonna spoiler this so I don't get any hate (I'm ok with the fact that majority of the people will find the rest below to be utter BS, especially if they find what's above to already be BS) |

Re: Jury acquits escort shooter
Each of these require you to use your own good sense of judgement and one shouldn't any of the steps to 100% justify anything or try to make a solid argument of any kind. In the end, religion relies on faith. Which is why opinions derived from religious stuff of any sort should never be shoved down anyone else's throat :P You can't force someone to have faith in something, that's personally a decision they would have to make themselves.
