Where do You Look at the Screen?
Every song i've been playing lately i've been paying more attention to where exactly i'm looking than the actual file, and it's messing me up... hahaha.
While you're playing, exactly what part of the screen do you look at? Does it alternate depending on the file/song? Here's an example: Top or bottom? Obviously it doesn't seem like a big deal, but i've found on SM when I am playing a very fast stream, i improve the farther down i look, but everything else i look right up towards the arrows for PA or else i suck ***. So I guess I alternate more than anything. |

Re: Where do You Look at the Screen?
ive asked this question before adn where you have the arrows pointing to is where most people read. i read at or above the receptors depending on the type of file or the section in the file. if its stream i stare higher, if its js i stare lower

Re: Where do You Look at the Screen?
I typically stare at the higher spot that you have on that pic, but when it's anything super dense I tend to look lower. It almost buys me a little time to process the patterns, maybe.

Re: Where do You Look at the Screen?
I typically look at the receptors at the beginning of the file for reference so I can get a feel for the bpm and such, but then I tend to focus under the receptors afterwards. I feel like I'll look really low sometimes just for the sake of pattern recognition.

Re: Where do You Look at the Screen?
I look at the absolute bottom. I have my speed mod and reaction time coincide, so as soon as I see the note, I go to hit it! No accidental early pressing, and not fast enough for me to get late goods. It's perfect because notes don't get clustered for me. n.n
About right here (2x speed):

Re: Where do You Look at the Screen?
I don't really look at any 1 spot but if anything my eyes are more towards the middle because I want to get a general idea of the pattern.
Then my hands move on their own. :P |

Re: Where do You Look at the Screen?
I tend to usually look higher on the screen. This is probably largely due to the fact that I "grew up" on FFR screencutting.

Re: Where do You Look at the Screen?
I look where the judgements are, kind of evolved that from stepmania (except the judgements are usually in middle/top).

Re: Where do You Look at the Screen?
Erm, we're supposed to look in one spot? My eyes follow the arrows. Up and down, up and down.
(or I guess for your upscrollolers, it's down and up down and up) Edit: If I'm daydreaming or not paying attention I stare at one spot Last edited by Ninty64; 02-3-2012 at 09:41 PM.. |

Re: Where do You Look at the Screen?
And quite incidentally, this is also the reason why I use 1.75 on FFR. |

Anyways, I tend to look at around the area where it says "perfect", "good", etc. I tend to look over there a lot so I can quickly re-adjust if my accuracy starts going haywire on say something like a one-handed trill. |

Re: Where do You Look at the Screen?
I mean when a denser part comes I look down a little lower but it's still pretty high. To me it's better to read a slower speed and process what's going on at the time.

Re: Where do You Look at the Screen?
I read about where roy reads haha. I think it's a habit I got from screencutting 1x back in the day. I had to look right at the receptor because you had to be precise

Re: Where do You Look at the Screen?
As I've said to some players, it's important to take advantage of reading the arrows at different places relative to the distance from the receptors. Playing casually, I'll look at where I'm normally comfortable at without thinking. However, when there's a song or section of a song in which I want to maintain accuracy, I'll stare closer to the receptors, like around where Dossar reads it. This helps ensure that I'm hitting the arrows as they come up towards the receptor, regardless of how well these arrows correlate to the music. Some examples of areas that I may do this includes a tricky to hit pattern or patterns that are susceptible to splitting (e.g. [13][24][13][24]).
By looking closer towards the receptor, your mind is really "screencutting" the game for you. If you played Stepmania with xmods, screencutting or looking close to the receptors would greatly help accuracy in songs with slow scrolling. This is no different than screencutting in other rhythm games. Players of the beatmania community used to screencut via a towel hanging from the top of their screens, which forces them to look closer at the note receptors (now the series have screencutting options/sudden modes). So to answer the OP's question, I look at the screen in various places, but generally three quarters to the receptors (fairly close). Look even closer if you want to help ensure PA. |

Re: Where do You Look at the Screen?
When I'm playing a file that doesn't really require too much concentration, I usually look at the middle of the screen, or a little lower.
I tend to follow the arrows when I'm playing something difficult. |
