Re: School talent show.
another idea might be to get a song that alot of people will know that has a decent stepfile that is hard. like a popular alternative rock song or some crap like that, then the kids will be like "ZOMG KWEL I KNOW DAT SONG"

Re: School talent show.
You might want to check out the Midare Megapacks if you want to do that.

Or something that just starts out very slowly. When I show off on pad I generally do ITG's Delirium.

Re: School talent show.
I personally wouldn't bother with anything technically hard because it's all going to look the same to people who don't really play anyway. If you are decent at FFR (can FC VD / Challenging levels with good PA), then just do a simple stream if you want the "look how impressive I am" effect.
Most people aren't going to know the difference between a jumpstream and a normal stream because they can't even read the stream to begin with. They won't know when there are two arrows at a time and therefore won't appreciate how much extra effort you're putting into impressing them. Trust me, I've played Stepmania in front of people who have never played, and no matter what level I play, the result is always something like "Wow dude that's sick." Even if I miss notes. Even if I suck. |

Jelly-Hmm I never thought about that...thats a good idea =]
EA-Thanks for the second pack idea :] and yes, upload your ttfaf file xD Overlord-Yeah, I could take something like that into consideration too Zybn-Wow, thats a very good point actually. I'll take that advice into consideration when I finally pick a song to do thanks everyone for the help so far =D |

Re: School talent show.
People who never played rhythm games like this will think that a fast stream looks harder than jacks or even jumpstream.
Just do something that's really fast. Like Electro Rush.

Re: School talent show.
Something better than fast streams would be jump-streams with hands/quads incorporated, like Terminal Strike. They'd be left in "aw" as you combo it because it seems more chaotic and chaos = harder for noobs.

Re: School talent show.
Dump files = no-no here. The point is to impress a crowd, not try to enlarge your e-penis.
Some things I would suggest: -Try to find songs your audience knows. As suggested earlier, TTFAF might be a good option here, as overstepped as it is. I even have an abbreviated version of the song (you did mention a 4 minute window) that I think I got single digit CBs on once. You could even tell your audience that it's not the full version because of time constraints. If you're interested, it's http://www.studenteducation.net/sims...hp?songid=3331 -Accuracy gives way to speed here in terms of impressiveness. AA on hard song > AAA on easy song, since you're catering to an audience unfamiliar with the intricacies of judging. Again, TTFAF with its ~13 tps streams could be something you could easily pull off. -Avoid dumps/HSMP songs at all costs. If you can't read the arrows, bet your life that your audience can't either. The point is to show off your skill, not the amount of disrespect the simartist has for humanity. :P If you can handle mines and jumpstream (in this particular case, 188 bpm 12th JS, which works out to 9.4 jumps per second--great for speed if the 16ths aren't doing it for them), I think I have the perfect song if you're going for audience recognition: http://www.studenteducation.net/sims...hp?songid=5848 (make sure to do oni for more awesome sauce). I can never get to the second verse because of the damn mines, but maybe you'll have better luck. >_< Oh, and one more thing...no matter what song you pick, make sure to get a video of your performance so we can see how much they liked it.

Now, like EnR said, inexperienced people relate to speed. The faster your hands are moving, the more talented you are. Doesn't matter how technically hard it is; they can't tell. They CAN tell, however, how fast it is. |

Re: School talent show.
Zybanthia and EnR speaks the truth.
I showed a bunch of my friends who doesn't play stepmania baha's Disregard vid; they were SHOCKED. Apparently continuous 300 bpm streams scares the **** out of everyone, if you can do that, you might win the crowd. If you can't do that, do something slower; anything above 200bpm is good.

Re: School talent show.
So basically all the advice boils down to the following:
As has been reiterated multiple times in this thread, you're going to want two things: -Something fast. Preferably 220 bpm + (I've found this to be a magic "impressive" number). -Something streamy. Long techno songs are good. -Something that you can CONSISTENTLY get a high (1000+) combo on. I don't know how much that's been mentioned in this thread, but people who don't really play rhythm games are not going to be impressed with stellar PA. What they want to see is that COMBO number steadily climbing higher. That's something that rises onscreen, and they can actually follow it (instead of that wall of arrows that you're busy concentrating on) It looks really good when you break 1000, for some reason... (big round numbers == pretty?... don't get me started :P ) |

Re: School talent show.
Parents and students say they are outraged and offended by a proposed band name and song scheduled for a high school talent show in Boulder this evening, but members of the band, named Coalition of the Willing, said the whole thing is being blown out of proportion.
The students told ABC News affiliate KMGH-TV in Denver they are performing Bob Dylan's song "Masters of War" during the Boulder High School Talent Exposé because they are Dylan fans. They said they want to express their views and show off their musical abilities. But some students and adults who heard the band rehearse called a radio talk show Thursday morning, saying the song the band sang ended with a call for President Bush to die. =============================== Web Based Collaborative Application | Virtual File Serve |

Re: School talent show.
You're really playing Stepmania for a talent show? I could never do that. T_T
Depending on your skill level, I'd play something moderately difficult. but you gotta factor in song choice too. Touhou piano isn't going to cut it imo. I think I'd pick Electro Rush X8.
