Default Favorite Side-Scrolling Shooters? Top Down?

I just started playing these again (Ikaruga on my GC, especially) and it brings back memories of good times I used to have.

I just DLed RaidenTrad (It sucks) for my SNES emulator... Yes, I have the original cartridge, at my house.

I also just played through Phalanx (which kind of blows), but it brings back fond memories of my favorite top-down shooter, ever.

Philosoma. I'm not sure if anyone here has played this release, but I think it came out fairly early in the PS1's life. My cousin sent his PS1 away to be repaired, twice, and they sent him this game as a consolation do-hickey. He was a strict RPGman, so he gave me the game. I played it for at least a month straight, and at the time, I had never had a greater challange in my life. It was such a good game, back then, but I, for the life of me, can't find my copy anywhere.

So, I'm asking you guys what your favorite games in that vein are. I'm sure to get the typical Moogy reply of something strange and Japanese (I played a bunch of em' off of that site you linked to the other week; I beat most of them, and realized that they weren't the full versions, and since I don't speak japanese, I didn't really bother pressing it.)

Mine is probably Philosoma. Really liked that game.

I spent like 30 credits beating Raiden Fighters in the arcade. What a cool game.

I also used to have Ikaruga for my Gamecube, but somehow lost it. I believe I let a friend borrow it and never got it back.

Probably Sin and Punishment: Successors to the Earth. It's not your conventional shooter, but it's enough like one that it counts.

Einhander 4 PS was kool as hell! Had great music too. I actually liked the Raiden series. My AIM SN "RTGallantry" is based on the opening song "Gallantry" lol. This is easy but pretty fun nonetheless:

The only problem with Raiden X is that it was so excessively easy that it was boring. You could almost hold down the fire button with a maxed out pink laser and homimg missles and beat the game. In the bosses you actually had to dodge some stuff that went at 0MPH, but that was still very easy.

Yes I am playing Hard difficulty.

Yea, it's mad easy like i said hehe. but also, ur computer speed has a lot 2 do with how easy the game is. it runs muuuuchhhh slower on crappy computers making it way easy 2 beat. and uhhh...there is no pink laser so i'll assume u meant purple =P

I like a whole bunch. It's hard for me not to like any shooter I've come across.

Shikigami no Shiro was pretty fun. I liked using the "Melee" weaponry.

Mars Matrix didn't do much for me. Maybe if I played it more.

Gunbird 2 was awesome. Made no sense, but it was awesome.

Ikaruga still remains my favorite, though I wish they left the manga in the game so there was actually a story. Not much to do after you beat it on Hard though =/

Gradius
Jackle(Jackal?) was probably my own personal favorite. Wasn't necessarily an up and down scroller, but you couldn't go backwards, eh.. close enough.

It wasn't really a cheat code. It was one of the icons you could select when you beat the game.

I wouldn't really consider that a shooter...

no, i don't think we're thinking of the same thing. wut i'm talking about wasn't just an icon of a ship, it was an actual mini-game. u control a spaceship and shoot other spaceships coming down the screen. gaaarrgghhhh...don't make me google this -_-

Look, I know I'm pretty dumb compared to Moogy about games, but I know what I'm talking about.

When you beat the game in MK3, you are given like 10 icons to choose from with some text like "CHOOSE YOUR DESTINY". They're bonus games. One of them shows all the finishers in the game. One of them starts a shooter game.

Allow me to beat MK3 and screenshot this so I can show you.

Ok, I can't believe you made me do this...but fortunately for me, and unfortunately 4 u, I have no life.

At the title screen enter the following code:
Up, Up, Down, Down, Left, Right, A,B,A
That cheat code will give you "Kool Stuff"

Once there, it will give you access to the mini-shooter we've been talking about:

Turn the mini-game on, press the Start button then WHAM:

And for the icing on the cake, I'll even give you the codes for Scott's Stuff and Kooler Stuff:
Scott's Stuff: X, B, A, Y, Up, Left, Down, Right, Down
Kooler Stuff: Select, A, B, Right, Left, Down, Down, Up, Up

Checkmate, GG

Apparently I was thinking of MKII, but it's the same minigame. At the end of MKII, you are given about 10 icons to choose from to see special crap. One of them is that minigame. I'm gonna see if I can get a screenshot of it.

In any event, that's not a 2D shooter. Space Invaders and similar games are totally different from what we're talking about.

~Squeek

Edit: No, I was right. Definitely not MK 1 or 2.

Edit 2: NOW I remember. It's ULTIMATE Mortal Kombat 3. Go get that one.

Quote:

"You have discovered the lost treasures of Shao Kahn. Choose your reward
