Re: The BEST ps2 rpg?
I'd have to say, with much controversy, FFX or Dark Cloud 2. Two very different games, but very good.
Haven't played Tales of the Abyss, but I want to.

Re: The BEST ps2 rpg?
Tales of the abyss, persona 4 and final fantasy X are my top 3 favorites from the ps2 library
Tales of legendia, odin sphere, Final Fantasy XII and kingdom hearts get an honorable mention because they are still great games. |

My vote goes for Dark Cloud 2.
I never finished the Xenosaga games due to broken discs, but I still think dc2 wins. |

Re: The BEST ps2 rpg?
Personally I loooooved Final Fantasy IX, but I can't really compare it considering I haven't played many other RPGs. I loved the story line, characters, pretty much everything, especially the music <3
Definitely going to play Tales of the Abyss considering I figure Squeek knows what he's talking about, and I guess Disgaea as well. Edit: I see a few people saying FFX, I personally thought that game was pretty bad, not terrible to the point where I wouldn't play it, but definitely not a "best RPG" deserving game. Story line was good, but that's about it. Movie scenes were terrible, I mean like seriously...http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-5FTJxfV3pc Not to mention whenever he smiled in movie scenes, I haven't played the game since it came out, and I still remember how retarded he looked smiling in movie scenes lmao. Final battle was the DUMBEST thing ever, common, autolife on the final boss, what type of bs is that. Final battle is supposed to be hard, not something that's impossible to lose -_- I'd still play the game again considering it had a good story line IMO, just certain things about the game were simply a joke. Also, I don't remember a single song from the game. Last edited by [TeRa]; 02-14-2009 at 01:49 AM.. Reason: picking better words to describe things |

Re: The BEST ps2 rpg?
I didn't really enjoy Disgaea as much as most people do, I dont know why.
Probably my favorite RPG was Suikoden 5. I'm a Suikoden fanatic, and 5 is a wonderful, wonderful game. The story is very well done, and the characters are a throw back to 1 and 2. I loved Persona 3, and I wish I had a ps2 still, because Persona 4 seems like an even better version of it. For, basically, a dating sim RPG, it was a hell of a lot of fun. I really didn't like the ps2 versions of a lot of things, because in my mind, it was a degradation of what I consider wonderful games. Shining Tears/Force Neo/EXA all are a terrible mockery of what I remember, seeing as I had the original Shining Force games on Genesis. Same goes for Breath of Fire Dragon Quarter, which was such a pity because I absolutely loved the other ones. |

Because it's an RPG. It's just not a Japanese RPG.

It's a very good RPG, as well. I actually got really into being the character and whatnot.

Re: The BEST ps2 rpg?
Lawl, "action RPG"
That's like calling rape "sex you didn't know you wanted". I won't argue it further, and I did enjoy CoN, but if we're going to call it an "action RPG", it's in an entirely different genre from the RPGs the OP seemed to be talking about, and that has nothing to do with country of origin.

Re: The BEST ps2 rpg?
Seriously? Am I seeing this correctly? You don't remember To Zanarkand? That's one of the most recognizable songs from the FF series, not to mention clearly one of the best.
Check out Michael Huang's arrangement and performance of two songs from FFX, To Zanarkand and Tidus' Theme. Other FF games have great songs, but these two are by far my favorites. http://fantasyreborn.com/mp3/FFX__To...and_reborn.mp3 http://fantasyreborn.com/mp3/FFX__Ti...eme_reborn.mp3

Re: The BEST ps2 rpg?
Zelda games are not RPGs. They're action-adventure games.
The main difference is that there are no levels in Zelda games. While Zelda II had them, it's not a standard in the franchise. And while there are other games classified as RPGs that do not have level systems, they're still considered RPGs because for the most part, they utilize the same concepts that all RPGs have. |

Re: The BEST ps2 rpg?
If you level up through the means of gaining EXP, it's an RPG. It can be a turn-based RPG, action RPG, tactical RPG, etc. Not too hard to understand. See, I wouldn't call Dynasty Warriors 4 an RPG even though you have stats. There's not enough of a leveling system.
EDIT: Wow, I can't believe OrganisM has never heard of an action RPG. I think he has been living under a rock. The genre dates back to the mid 80s. Maybe tactical games just aren't your forte. Last edited by Zybanthia; 02-16-2009 at 11:17 PM.. |
