Stepmania 5 Pack (simfile artists/gfx artists needed)

So here's the deal. When you download Stepmania 5, it comes pre-packed with two songs: two of my really shitty songs. They are, however, the two most played songs on Stepmaniaonline.net. Why? They come with the game. Casual players and skilled players alike will play what's convenient for them. The songs that come with the game offers a huge amount of potential for songs/files to be played due to their accessibility. Most people are lost on stepmania.com since there's a confusing labyrinth of obstacles to actually get songs. They ususally end up going with stepmix songs or other packs that have been hosted on there for almost a decade.

Here's where we come in. Stepmania 5 devs have given us the green light to make a pack of files that will be included with the download. This means every single person that downloads the game will have our files in it. This is a huge potential for exposure, and it gives the game itself a nice starting point. This is a huge project but I'm confident we can find people willing to put in some work for this.


What we need:
-Simfile artists
-Graphics artists
-Royalty free songs with written permission to be included
-Chart judges
-Organizers


Tentative rules/guidelines
-All songs are to be fully charted from Novice to Heavy (pad) and Expert (keyboard).
-We will also be working on adding 3 additional charts to every style of play: 3key, pump, kb7, solo, doubles.
-Songs must be royalty free, and have written permission from the artist. We'll have a pool of songs people can pledge to step for certain difficulties, or if you want to do the file yourself that's up to you.
-Simfile artists will be credited per chart. Once a song is selected for the project, you can claim the spot of a difficulty and your name will be added (think of how r21freak packs are done).
-Song length MUST be between 1:45 and 3:00. There may be exceptions for boss songs.
-Banners are to be 512x160, backgrounds 1280x720. No exceptions. Guidelines: http://z13.invisionfree.com/stepmani...hp?showtopic=6
-Final pack will have 20-25 files hopefully.
-Song files submitted must be 320kbps CBR (sm5 doesn't work well with vbr), or OGG format.

Anyway this seems to be an amazing project and I hope it'll get support. I totally can make graphics (and maybe charts if you ever get short of simartists)

also instead of using cd titles we'll just be using a default cdtitle for the pack itself. and we can maybe come up with a specific name for the project when it's included.

Oh wow that's pretty rad! I've seen so many people by now that had no idea where to start when it comes to songs. And now that the old stepmania site is no longer around, it's in even worse for that matter at the moment. So this is a great thing!

I'm just going to watch and follow the progress for now, but I could whip up some pad charts (Single and Double) if any song from the pool piques my interest c:

So uhh...how would I spread the difficulties out for Novice to heavy then? I want to have a hard Heavy chart ITG-like (but of course, with SM 5 features in the chart and all).

Hmm alright, I can help out on the pad side at least, though still bothered by the lack of one chart. I have no idea what chart I'd want to get rid of. I guess I'll just stick more with spreading it out more so Heavy charts can still have a true expert chart.

You have my support on all styles. I've played a bunch of pop'n versus so I know how 3-key works and I can definitely help on the KB7/Solo/PIU fronts if/when I have time.

EDIT: also, I'll request to be a judge if you're still looking; I can also help normalize sync before it gets released and I have played/charted in all areas so I can help in quality control

In case I don't have the time to review files, I can be the gfx quality control/coordinator so at the very least everything aesthetic is in acceptable standards. I'd probably be looking at everything from a designer point of view, which leaves a lot of room for commentary, but I'd be reasonable to say the least (re: I wouldn't remake an acceptable set on my own accord just because I don't like it, that's dumb and a waste of my time).

Just as a thought, I'd encourage that we shift from using 800x600 backgrounds to widescreen dimensions since SM5 is 16:9 native. I kind of don't see the point in adhering to the old 4:3 aspect ratio when everyone's screens are wider, and there's plenty of canvas space to work with in 16:9.

Should have at least a fully charted file for this, etc. Just gotta find a song with permissions.
