I understand what you are saying Jewpin, but personally,
I would never let my kids listen to that stuff...

If you allow the contents of a song to effect your behavior dramatically then you are weak minded and most likely have many other issues. If anything rap music is an opportunity to sort out kids who have a sheep mentality and those who can think for themselves.

Glad to see another proponant of the "The best method of ensuring the positive growth of humanity is just to remove all the warning labels from things, and let it sort itself out" theory.

I think in general the answer to "Is rap music a bad influence" for me anyway is to say:

Rap music, if it influences you, seems to me to generally communicate a negative message that would define the influence as "bad" but I would rather hope instead that people are capable of listening to it, and actually saying "Wow, the lifestyle of doing drugs, screwing hoes, and breaking laws doesn't sound very appealing to me" and either listen to the music if they enjoy it, or just stop.

That's the thing. Too many people don't see it as bad at all. And it's not so much acting out rap songs as it is emulation of those who sing it (which, in turn, often means acting out the songs, but the rationalization is completely different).

Well as I said, that is how -I- define it. I'd like to think that others are able to think critically about this stuff, but time and again that gets proven wrong.

Rap music influences me a great deal, it influences me to go "That lifestyle is absurd, self-destructive and contrbutes greatly to the negative connotation that is then applied to the entire culture"

I'm all for that theory, cause honestly some things are common sense. There was a warning label on my washing machine saying "Do not pour gasoline in washing machine." and I just sat there for a minute. Trying to comprehend why the hell anyone would put gas in a washing machine. However, I only think that theory should apply to high school and up. Because we all know that 8th grade and under are still trying to learn basic common sense, but once you get to be in high school you should know the basics and know whether the lyrics are bull or whether you want to follow them. If you want to follow them and get shot in the streets of Chicago, then more air for me.

Exactly. And it's for that reason that you're not part of the group under my scrutiny.

i like listenin to some rap artists but not all. Rappers like eminem(old stuff) diabolic, and immortal technique are a few of my favorites. yes, some of their music is considered bad lyrics but most of it is in depth lyrics about life and the government. i hate rap music like 50 cent that only rap about having sex and having big cars.

to the original question, if you listen to the right type of rap music, it could be a good influence, not a bad =]

I think it is a bad influence, I don't like rap, I just like metal, all rap talks about sex, killing cops, and joining gangs, and later get killed. These are exmples of some rap that talks about this stuff. This is what kids aren't ready for until they are maybe 15-18 years of age.

All songs by immortal technique that have nothing to do sex, killing cops, and joining gangs, and later get killed.

i know you said that was an example of SOME rap taht talk about those certain issues. But you should listen to Immortal Technique if your not already. He raps more about personal issues within his life or issues with the government. If you dont like Bush, listen to Immortal Technique =]

No thanks, but as I said I'm a metal head, I listen to metal. I'm having a thought that maybe I'll listen to Immortal Technique.

This is based on opinion...
In my opinion it does not have a bad influence
but i also do not believe influences are the cause of anything...
I can be around a person who swears constantly and is constantly rude and some people would say he/she is a bad influence. I can start to act like them or I will not act like them. Children may not be old enough to make their own decisions on what is considered "good or bad" so this topic can go either way

Er...you don't believe influences are the cause of anything, but you will grant that you can start to act like someone when you are around them...which basically means that you are influenced by them.

This confuses me.

not all rap is bad, you know, rap is just a music style that contains strong bass beats and fast singing

Fair enough, and a point I was going to bring up coming from the other direction in response to Adamaja456 pointing out an exception to the stated rule.

But you must admit that the -majority- of the -most popular- and bestselling, and most commonly played, purchased and listened to rap does in fact contain some or all of the negative motifs described above.

I mean, to be more accurate, the thread could have been called "Rap themes of drugs, sex, violence, and materialism a bad influence on kids?" So if it helps you frame an actual response with a stance, and evidence to think of it that way, I'm sure the OP won't mind.

Well you have a point that not all rap is bad, but 50 cent, Mike Jones, and Eminem say that kind of stuff.

It's funny, considering my point was more that -most- of it is bad, and just because there are a few exceptions doesn't render the point invalid.

ok i love all music, i myself grew up in "the streets" and yea ive always liked rap, ive always liked music in general, i mean sure rap can be a bad influence but there are bad influences everywhere, ive had to do illegal stuff growing up and yea idk when you actually grow up in that kind of situation you end up being able to understand people alot easier, but yea i was on a tangent, well anyway life in general is a bad influence, not just rap.

also i love music that expresses a great amout of hatred and anger because well would you rather it be lyrics or manifest itself in anger and violence , personally ive had some murder fantasies but everyone has felt things like that before.
