Default List the programs you know.

Stick with programs related to design, ones that you have at least gotten comfortable with, not something you opened once on your friends computer and played with for 3 minutes.

Strongest:
3ds Max
Photoshop
Illustrator
AfterEffects
ZBrush
Encore
Premiere
MSPaint (lol)

Good
Flash
DreamWeaver
LightRoom
Corel Painter
MaxWell Render
Joomla
SignGo
Corel Draw
Mocha
SynthEyes
Boujou
Jasc Animation Shop

Decent
Maya
Lightwave
C4D
Bryce
Blender
Alice
Animation Master

I'm sure there's stuff I've left out, but that's my list. How about you?

Jeez

Strong
Photoshop
Flash (not actionscript though)
Fireworks

Good
Cinema 4D (I know the program pretty well now I just don't use it as often as I should)
Gamemaker (bahaha)
InDesign

Deece'
Visual Basic
Illustrator (thought I fukken hate it, flash for vector 4ever!!!!)
Swift3D
G(ay)IMP
Apophysis
Paint (dude the windows 7 paint is BADDD)

I dunno what else really, I don't use a ton of programs because frankly learning too many programs scrambles my brain. Learning the basics of design and finding programs that correspond with THAT is easier than learning software to perform design disciplines.

I probably like Flash or Photoshop the most. Photoshop's pretty fun, but doing crazy abstract vector drawings are also fun.

Whats that one that starts with an A, deals in weird abstract symmetrical stuff and sounds like it should be an element on the periodic table?

Photoshop (certified, but that doesn't mean shit [got it for free hehe])
Illustrator
Paint
FL Studio 10 (audio design i guess hehe)
Audacity (^)

Dreamweaver
Gimp
InDesign

Flash

That's about all I've been exposed to and worked with seeing as I'm not into Video nor 3D.
2 More Web Design courses next year so I get stronger at Dreamweaver, Flash and CSS in general.

sumopaint isn't too horrible if you've got nothing else. but photoshop and gimp are probably better... its better than paint tho...

Ohhh man dunno how I left ZBrush out of there, definitely one of my strongest programs.

I know a hefty amount of programs only because of freelancing. If a job calls for something a certain other program can't do, then I find one more suited for the job and learn it.

Now you should compile a list of design programs you want/need to learn.

I know I need to learn AutoCad and SolidWorks, possibly even Rhino for cnc manufacturing/3d printing. Probably need to learn Excel (not exactly design but it helps with invoicing and such). Not sure if I'll ever need this, but if I get into the TV industry I'll need to learn Adobe OnLocation.

I feel like I can't bother wasting time with graphic design programs when my art skills to begin with aren't fully flushed. I feel like there's so much mastery to be had behind coloring, shading, texturing, detailing, etc.

Try your hand at a 3d program then, because you don't necessarily have to worry a whole lot about the artistic side of things if you don't want to. You can dive right into the technical aspects of building pieces, texturing is simple as hell and doesn't take much to make something look really awesome.

Also, wtf @ everyone here that knows 3d programs any never makes anything with it haha. Why are me and Mythix the only ones that post any of it?

I've had lessons in 3d software, but not a lot. I know how to model, but texturing I have no clue how to do it in a proper way yet. I never really got properly educated about texturing at my school, and haven't taken the initiative to learn it on my own yet. Planning on it in the future though.

If you can help me out with explaining texturing, that would be awesome.

I have a lot of experience with ProEngineer, which is an industry equivalent to Solidworks. Same shit, different GUI.

I'm pretty okay with Paint too haha.

Texturing methods are highly dependent on what you're trying to texture. If you just want to texture say, a skateboard, then you could just use base materials and a different material for every object in the skateboard. If you want to texture a human character or something, then that involves more complex UVW unwrapping and less direct texturing methods (time consuming).

I'm pretty pro at making procedural materials (textures that don't require a bitmap) so making maps like rubber, chrome, sandpaper etc.

Go download VRay for 3ds max and I'll teach you anything you want to know.
