Re: PARTlClPAT3 - 2009
I can't stand how everyone says that them doing it won't do anything because it won't make a difference. If everyone else thought that way then nobody would ever do anything and we wouldn't get anywhere. Ever heard phrases like it only takes one snow flake to avalanche? It's true. If you start something and someone likes it or agrees with it then they jump on it and it's just a chain reaction. My school has 2,000 kids and about 400 of us do the silence. That's a pretty good percentage of people who can start that avalanche. And if you get your school and everyone gets their school going... You get my point. I'm done ranting, lol.

Re: PARTlClPAT3 - 2009
Yeah. You get this big packet of little cards that say the same thing that on the one you're wearing except smaller. And you're supposed to like recruit people to wear them who aren't already and start the Day of Silence. I've gotten plenty of people to wear them. I mean, maybe I didn't necessarily "change" their minds. But, I could have influenced it towards the cause rather than against. Not counting in factors like the people who took my flyers could have been friend's just going along with it, someone who didn't follow/understand it, or people who are just jumping on the bandwagon.

Re: PARTlClPAT3 - 2009
Hey, so, lots of people who stood up for something they believed in were ridiculed or ignored. Take a look at civil rights sit-ins. Those people had food thrown on them because they were sitting "where they shouldn't," and if they'd given up and left, we'd likely still have "colored" bathrooms.
Don't sit here like a wiener and say, "Oh, I believe this is good and right but I won't participate because no one here understands and they'd just be ignorant." Make them pay attention. People will continue to be ignorant as long as no one forces them to confront their misconceptions. I've had kids do this. Unfortunately there was no explanation, just a piece of paper taped to t-shirts that said "DAY OF SILENCE," and I'm sure they'd have loved to explain to me why they were being quiet, but then they'd talk? That said I hope you all participate so you'll shut up. =) |

Re: PARTlClPAT3 - 2009
I'm going to make an FFR Day of Silence. To represent you don't post for the day. I'll try of do it at exactly 11:59, my time, so I don't post for the following day. But, I'd be interested in seeing people showing their silence in a new way. And as a celebration at the end of the day. Well, the night. Anyone wanna help me work on the idea of the celebration?

Re: PARTlClPAT3 - 2009
I'm going to participate. Will go to Ben Franklin's Craft Store or something this weekend to pick up a shirt and write on it/draw on it, whatever, for the DOS. I agree with Jurs' views actually, both about love and speaking out about it instead of being silent.
I go to two schools - one school is nearer to the city of Richmond, older and filled mostly with African-Americans and other minorities. That school has an organized LGBT club and they participate in the DOS every year. The other school I go to is filled with mostly white people - it's not very diverse, there aren't a lot of minorities and there's no organized club in the school for LGBT, even though there's a considerable amount of them including myself. I'm going to spread the word there. You know, get people to actually do something like organize a club there or whatever because I can't do it myself as much as I'd like to. I don't have the time and organizing a club takes a lot of time. Last edited by Nyokou; 04-8-2009 at 09:57 AM.. |

Re: PARTlClPAT3 - 2009
Wow.. I'm surprised I haven't seen this thread yet. I made up my mind back in like January that I'd be participating this year and have been counting down the days. I think it'd be great if a lot of people actually got together and participated.

Re: PARTlClPAT3 - 2009
We once had kids going around school with red duct tape on their mouths that had "LIFE" written on them. In response my friend took a piece of duct tape, wrote "CHOICE" and put it on his forehead.

I did this last year at school and my friends were making fun of me the whole day to purposely try and get me to talk when I couldn't.
