Re: Vertex^2, 99.80 7 Excellents
They're both pretty damn accurate, though.
Personally I think madmatt is in a totally different league of his own, but that's just me |

Re: Vertex^2, 99.80 7 Excellents
Cetaka has a really good point when he brings up both players, because they truly are in their own leagues. Put Matt against Chris in some prevalent tournament-style charts (charts that aren't purely intended on speed/simple patterning/etc) and Matt will lose a very large majority of matches because he doesn't care too much about things like crossovers/jump-usage/whatever -- he cares only about speed.
Conversely, put Chris against Matt on any sort of speed-oriented file (and when I mention speed, I'll just use the Tachyon pack standard of 15 NPS+, or 225+ BPM 16ths), and Chris will lose a good majority of files because he simply can't sustain it as well as Matt can. Chris is a great player and has shown that he can FA 16-block charts, but Matt is phenomenal at sustaining accuracy even when tired. They are both great at what they do in different parts of the game. In fact, Mad Matt used to be the best PRIMARILY no-bar player (primarily meaning main preference of play), but Prolix is easily second by far, because I can't think of any other ITG players that can stream that speed OR pass 17s no bar (other than Matt). Then there are people who are excellent at double, people who have absurdly consistent accuracy, people who are excellent at mod-reading without any sort of memorization, etc. ITG is so divided now, but the community seems to be sustaining different styles of play now - at least, tournaments are now in support of running double-related events, and the big Midwest tournament (University of Illinois Champaign-Urbana) runs singles, sightreading/mods, double, and couples, which really promotes all sorts of play. With that being said, I personally find it hard to say who is the best ITG player, because best can pertain to a number of different (relevant) things. |

When I read Jeff's post on AIJ about ITG attitudes toward DDR files I totally agreed with him. It sucks that because a file has pretty hard patterns and provides a reading challenge that nobody else wants to play it besides the well known players like Brosoni, RIN-GO, 513, etc. Notice how nobody in the top area (putting aside players like Chris but he doesn't play DDR charts) plays files with hard patterns or parts with slow BPM sections. That's exactly what DDR has (although I do understand there are some very bad charts). I will be more impressed if someone is able to get an ITG player to legitimately play Valkyrie Dimension Challenge and pass it no bar, doing all the crossovers the way they're supposed to be done. Hint: Nobody has posted a VD challenge nobar pass -- that file nobar is at *least* a 16 and is probably going to be harder than the 17s Ben passed because of the extreme movement required for the crossovers (double stepping would make it significantly easier, but go tell me if any ITG player thinks doing all those crossovers legit nobar is easier than doing a 200 bpm stream with simpler patterns). tl;dr I think the best player would be someone that contributes, has a good attitude, and doesn't divide themselves into a certain section just to look impressive. Chino (ITG) and Staiain (Stepmania) are examples of players of who I'd think are the best simply because they do admit they won't do well on certain types of files, but don't just say "a file is bad not going to play it" when they really mean "my score will look like shit compared to what I get on 18s". |

Re: Vertex^2, 99.80 7 Excellents
Think about goals though...
for people like Mad Matt(And me), the goal is to see how far you can push your limits. How fast can you move, and how long can you move that fast. Playing 9-12's, or playing Konami charts laden which bullshit pattens(VD) doesnt help achieve that goal, so what reason is there for Matt to play them? People at the local arcade talk smack to me all the time because I cant "99-quad easy 9's and 10's" and because I dont play anything below a 13 anymore except for warm ups or because Im bored. But think about it, Im not playing the game to be good at 9-12's, Im playing to become the fastest player there is, so why would I waste my time playing stuff like VD or Paranoia Revolution when it doesnt help me accomplish my goal?

But yeah, a lot of people just care about really boring stream-heavy charts mid-level (referring to mid-level in context of the community, so 14/15), or really obscenely fast charts that require extremely minimized movement. No one cares about technical/accurate charts that require you to actually play and practice to get better (that is, no one aside from Chris). It is what it is. |

Re: Vertex^2, 99.80 7 Excellents
Well if it makes you feel better AJ, Brett/Flash only plays 9-12's now, and quads almost anything in that range. I cant convince him to play anything higher haha.
