Default Playing FFR in public

When this discussion broke out and then died out in the scores thread, I thought I'd bring this to more people's attention.

Have you ever played FFR in public? If not, why not?

(these questions only apply if you answered yes)
What were people's reactions to you doing so?
Have you managed to convince anyone to try it out?

Myself, I'm fairly convinced I only got ChaoticMarin to register and give permission because I wouldn't leave her alone otherwise. I did get filmed once, though in my experience it was more often "could you stop tapping so loudly, people are trying to study." Undergrad library FTL.

As for convincing people, I got my brother to try, but he's like "when I hear this music, I don't want to be told how to dance to it." (This was in response to DDR, but it was basically the same thing.)

I have at school, simply to get better because I had nothing better to do during study hall. Everyone that saw me play went insane.. it was pretty funny. I've only convinced two people to play, but one of them loves the game while the other doesn't give a shit about it anymore.

I'll be planning to do this at school next year probably.

But, no I have not played FFR in an actual public place.

Every once in a while. I don't plan on doing much of it in the future though.

No, but I would far prefer people doing that over Facebook. I know when I was going through college and you actually needed to do some real work on the computers there, it was hard to get a computer because even though there were a lot of computers, just about every one was filled with some otherwise-wouldn't-touch-computers person on Facebook.

Save Facebook for when you get home -- some of us actually had work to do.

Facebook -- ruining campus computer labs since its inception.

*Can't stand the types of people who otherwise would never touch a computer, but yet once Facebook came out would hog up all the computers doing that all day*

Yes, even playing easier files (stream especially) gets a decent crowd of people to watch in class. (10/30 or so)

And then they blocked FFR last year or so in school. RIP.

I play every so often at school, and I've definitely gotten some wows and "omg how do you do that" moments. Largest crowd I've gotten is probably around 10 or so :P The actual engine is blocked though so I have to use the community engine, the indeed engine or the DF engine.

Also my favorite reaction was back in '09 or something:

"No way. You are cheating!"
lift my hands to show the misses appear, then start up again.
"What the ****."

Use my zebulonhollus.zxq.net site, my school also blocked FFR but you could play some songs from there or indeed engine (or alternate engines for that matter) -- that's what I do.

As for getting people to play this game... I think the important part is to ask:

What made YOU continue playing this game in the first place?

This question is very important and that should be a key focus here.

Yep, played it at Best Buy.

Thankfully no one watched.

Used to play in the student centre when I was just dicking around with my friends between classes. Yeah they'd freak out and shit lol. People walking by would stop and watch for a bit, and a few times my friends would whisper to me that I was drawing a crowd while I was playing haha. Sometimes people would come up to me after I'd finished playing a song asking me wtf I was playing, and once it was actually a pretty hot chick (right after bagging Document 13b for the first time a few years back, hehu)

At least ten of my friends had made accounts at some point, and one of my friends actually got to the point of AAAing 7s, which isn't half bad if you ask me.

As much as you could attract people to this site, what also matters is if they stay and continue on. I've seen far too many old accounts registered and the last activity was just a few days after the signup date, lol

So yeah, you guys should ask yourself what made you continue playing FFR in the first place. Why not guitar hero? etc

Dossar: For me, it's always been about the competition. There was always some new goal to shoot for, there was always a rival I had to take down or keep down, there was always someone better than me commenting on my improvement, and the thrill of getting a new personal best is like no other I've experienced. I've always been a driven sort of individual like that.

Countless times in high school. Playing around a crowd of people going "yo look at this kid" was entertaining. I did get complaints from some of my teachers countless times, but it was well worth it. It also really helped that I went to the same high school as Xiao, WTFBrandon, and xThai so we already had like a FFR clique going on, rofl.

I'd say maybe a ratio of 1:5 people that have seen me play were interested in trying the game out at the very least—It's difficult to convince casuals otherwise. I can only think of maybe 3-5 people who actually took the game more seriously because of my influence and help getting them into it.

If people are legitimately interested, help them out by getting them started—it's not enough to just tell them what to do or download. Do it for them, show them the process, give them all the links and resources, etc. Frankly, it's impossible to find a starting place for StepMania in particular because it's been divided into countless different communities and cliques and stepmania.com in itself is very limited and outdated in terms of simfiles and information. Really, the only way to widespread StepMania more is by making stepmania.com -the- central website with everything in it, which is pretty much impossible at this point in time. At least everything FFR related is here, which is the major advantage and plus side that FFR has over StepMania—anybody and everybody can start very easily and readily.

I play because I love the idea of setting goals and testing my limits. Competition helps, but I am the type of person that feels extremely pressured when being in such setting. Now that I'm not too serious about scores, I still play because the game itself is still fun for me, and it's a great way to put your mind off of things.

I used to have an inferiority complex the size of Jupiter, that's why I stayed for the first three years or so.

Now it's just to make fun of furries.

Well sure, but why didn't you do Guitar Hero, osu, etc? (obviously you can play osu but people tend to stick more to one game)

So I'm asking, why Stepmania and FFR?

I honestly think these types of questions will help with newcomers, because they don't have the same feelings as we do for this game haha

FFR is my first rhythm game with complete access (besides Guitar Hero but I didn't own any gaming consoles to keep playing it). It's a game that I started playing about three years ago, and I've grown with it since. The fascinating part is that throughout all of those years I still find this game extremely fun even though there are some days when you despise the game. Stepmania and Thirdstyle has the same concepts, but it's not the same enjoyment that I share with FFR.
