Default How to Index

So since a friend of mine has decided to finally take the stop up from one handed to spread, I told him I'd take the switch with him and go from spread to index, but as I've been noticing, I'm not really sure how to do so many combos I'm very much used to as spread.

And suggestions on songs that can teach me some of the basics of index?

Yes, I'm going to practice either way, but some help is always appreciated.

Flight of the bumblebee, although fast, would be good for getting used to the common note patterns (like staircases.)

Just played a random song, Enthusia, has a decent amount of staircases at a speed that is not too easy for me yet, but not so hard I wanna rage.

Moonbeam was the FIRST song I thought of and is a pretty decent song actually.
There will be many plays through that song in the upcoming days.
Thanks.

Index is pretty straight forward. Every other note you hit with the alternating index finger. Unless it is a turn... Another general rule is to never hit left notes with your right finger or right notes with your left finger. Some people don't do this, but I find it really helps increase my speed if I don't allow that kind of conflict.

Both fingers can hit both the up and down keys though. You know which finger to use for the next up or down note depending on what note you hit previously. If the previous note was a right arrow obviously you have to use your left finger for the next note unless it is another right note. If you just hit a down note with your left finger and the next note is an up arrow than you use your right finger because your left finger was just used on the previous.

If you click a down note with your left finger and the next note is a left arrow. Well you are screwed. You have to double step.

Once you burn these rules into your brain you will be able to do 250+ bpm 16th notes. Good luck to you.

Well the biggest problem I seem to be having are the left down right, left up right, right up left, right down left patters. They kill me.

Yup. That would be a crossover. You need to double step them. I find it to be more efficient in the long run than trying to use your left finger on the right arrow.

My fingers also do not understand that the can both do up or down. Brain cannot compute this.
Not to mention streams with jumps. FANTASTIC!
Index is fun.

One of the biggest steps from spread to index is realizing that you don't just have 1 finger for 1 key.

there are two ways to handle crossovers:
1. use a double setup like serenade snow. then you can do any pattern you like index
2. have the finger on the down arrow as high or as low as possible so your other finger can slip past
