Don't get a Mac, they're overpriced. Also don't get a netbook if you plan to do coding on it. I would be driven insane if I was forced to write code on one of those tiny little keyboards.
It's pretty much impossible to get a bad laptop in the $500-$1000 range. I recommend Asus, but I don't think there's any laptop manufacturer that has a real reputation for making lousy computers.

This. I've only heard good things about the xps line of laptops. My friend has one and he absolutely loves it. He got it for ~$600 dollars, but the specs are nothing to laugh at.

Strangely enough I have very limited experience with Dell, if only because there's oftentimes so much polarization with respect to opinions. Some people swear by them, and others hate them with the fury. Never took the time to really form my own opinion there.
