The Death Piano Thread (And Why You Are Missing Out)
ITT people discuss strategies/difficulties/approaches/etc.
I really don't know why more people aren't absolutely fascinated with optimizing this file. It's a very interesting, strategic challenge -- not merely a "tough song." To me, it's like a puzzle to figure out; one of the few files where you can take advantage of really weird approaches at almost every part. Death Piano commands a very broad set of skills and that makes it one of the more intriguing files in the game, IMO. My hope is that people actually take the time to peel this song apart and realize that it's not as tough as they think. I want to see some srs score boosts. Too many people are just blowing through DP with the same old approach they use for every other file, and are totally missing all the cool shit they could be having fun with in terms of optimization. To be clear, your standard approach isn't optimal. You have to switch between several strategies the entire way through (at least I did) to AAA it or at least come near to the AAA. Luckily, most transitions are easy to make and the strategies themselves are really interesting. I urge you all to approach the chart with a different perspective. Look at it as a multi-part puzzle instead. Last edited by Reincarnate; 03-22-2012 at 11:07 AM.. |

Re: The Death Piano Thread (And Why You Are Missing Out)
This is outta my league, but so true.
Samurai has over 100 goods and Dossar has 8 cleans. Even if Dossar is still superior, the gap between these two doesn't reflect this at all. It could be really interesting to see people give it this kind of pre-treatment. Not like you're gonna sightread this.

Sadly there are very few people good enough to even consider playing this file seriously. For those that can, however, yes I agree. The file is pretty awesome.

This song would probably be played a ton more if this game wasn't combo-based. That end trill is just cruel.

My biggest problems with me and this chart isn't the chart's difficulty -- it's more so my inherent weaknesses get stressed really heavily.
I have an idea on how I would play this on arrow keys only and switch styles like mad, but it would be beyond uncomfortable. I'm also not sure that I can handle all of the jumpgluts on arrow keys, too. (for the record, I've made it to the last jump gluts of the song with 17g, having 12g after the 24th trills.) |

Have you considered other layouts like QSLP or something similar?

I can actually FC up until the jump jacks, and then I just die. I can't keep up with the speed of those jump jacks at all. I really do like the file though. I don't know why my best score is rank 980 though, that's just stupid.

You're right that the scoreboard is hilarious for the file. But there is a huge problem in this thread that all of you should realize (I'll leave it up to you guys this time)
--- Also, if you want tips on Death Piano, it's good to put emphasis on certain things rather than approach it normally. For example, the speedup minijack section in the middle. There's a 2 frame quad and [12] 16th that should be hit faster so you don't fall behind. I should do a guide for Death Piano sometime, I've AAAd the ending on video

Not only that, but anyone from the elite on here could make excellent use out of it. I'm sure that if you make a great guide about Death Piano, this song's scoreboard would get a drastic change. At the very very least 10 people on here are able to reach sub 100 goods. Interested in reading more about this, Dossar.

Re: The Death Piano Thread (And Why You Are Missing Out)
My strategy is not to even take a serious attempt at it until I can just get regular AAA's. I think I'm the only one on here that only has 1 AAA and 4 years under my belt (including other profiles).
But ya I can definitely see it being more of a puzzle, kind of like Monstrous Turtles!. |

Re: The Death Piano Thread (And Why You Are Missing Out)
Well I managed to get sub 100 goods. The thing about it is that the ending isn't as intimidating as people think at all. It's basically one fast jumpglut then two one handed trills.

Re: The Death Piano Thread (And Why You Are Missing Out)
It's a framer issue, Stickly. If you think about it, the ending is a 200 bpm 32nd trill, which works out to 26-27 notes per second. You try to quantize that into 30 frames per second and you end up with the left and right arrows being 1 frame apart from each other most of the time, making the DP megatrill into something you can jumpjack for a while depending on your remaining stamina.
That's what I think he's trying to say. (also, I have comboed the first jumpglut after the slow part by quad-mashing, but it was extremely strenuous)
