FFR Visual Novel (A Simfile Dating Sim)
Hey everyone! This is my first time starting a thread.
I got an idea literally a couple hours ago from Dinglesberry's post in the FFR RPG thread to make a FFR Visual Novel, where the simfiles are personified as anime girls (or something of the sort). If you don't know what a visual novel is, they are also known as "dating sims," and are generally text stories where you make choices to reach a happy ending — so yes, a simfile dating sim. Although Dingle's post was a joke, I genuinely have interest in this because I think it would be hilarious. However, I only have fairly basic CS knowledge, let alone any videogame-making experience. I do have a little art skill, but that's nowhere near as concerning as the game-making part for now. On the other hand, I am definitely determined enough to learn whatever I need to in order to make this into reality. I was wondering what your guys' thoughts are on this: any ideas you have for this VN, any tips for me to get started, etc. I'm probably gonna go solo for now until I am confident I am getting somewhere; since this is such a big project, I don't want to bug people unless I know it's going somewhere. I will try to upload progress/plans to this thread, idk how often though If you have no game-making knowledge, you can still provide input on who would be the waifus, bad guys, dialogue you want in the game, etc. Last edited by Swedcxzaq; 10-7-2019 at 07:04 PM.. I don't mean to break your bubble but you're saying you'll learn 3 fields to make a novel ?
Unless you come up with a defined plan or at least progress, I dont think people will (or even can) do much for you. Good luck though, that sounds funny |

If this is a serious inquiry (e.g. you're actually willing to commit to learning to code, direct, and/or draw) let me know and i can give you some pointers in thread

Re: FFR Visual Novel (A Simfile Dating Sim)
most people use Ren'Py to make indie visual novels, as far as I know
https://www.renpy.org/ Its pretty simple to use im pretty sure, unless you want to do complicated stuff like battle systems or something Also my post wasnt a joke xd I have thought deeply about this topic in the past lol not gonna lie, my idea at the time was a dating sim featuring all the top players tho My suggestion is, for music you can probably use the actual songs that are in FFR (depending on the permissions I suppose, it seems like alot of people who give permission say its cool to use it anywhere). Drawing the art might be difficult but might be funny and fun to do so it's ur call, might have to use stock images/anime pics from some site that allows free use for them, or commission someone to draw some art for it Also my suggestion is to make minacious "meana" grace and pippi (the osu mascot) as villains lol, part of the plot could be them trying to ruin FFR by beating all the songs and making everyone leave the game Also Bang Riot from Blastix Riotz as a villian lul Last edited by Dinglesberry; 10-7-2019 at 07:52 PM.. |

Re: FFR Visual Novel (A Simfile Dating Sim)
As a starting point though I'd figure that the best way to start would be to plan out a story, the characters, and sort of the route/story you'd have to take for each character.. I've only really played a few dating sims (DapackPack is a dating sim genius though I think he reviews them as well as a hobby so he probably knows more about how theyre developed), but as far as I know, most of the time dating sims only allow you to "get with" one girl, and you need to play through them a few times to see each route, so it shouldn't be too bad if the story is sort of linear
Maybe itd be a good idea to brainstorm plot elements in here or somethin i dunno I wouldn't bother focusing on the art at all until you have your story fully laid out, and a list of what assets and images you'll probably need for different scenes etc Last edited by Dinglesberry; 10-7-2019 at 07:57 PM.. |

Re: FFR Visual Novel (A Simfile Dating Sim)
I'm sorry was that awkward? I meant, this sounds like it could be a very humorous idea and I'd love to see it happen.
If you get a basic script going I'd love to help write or edit haha

Re: FFR Visual Novel (A Simfile Dating Sim)
Yeah Dingles is exactly right, Ren'py is open-source and pretty easy to get used to. It's lightweight but also offers native Python support (don't worry if you don't know Python).
Some other options are Novelty, which IIRC is totally drag-and-drop and also free; TyranoBuilder is also drag-and-drop but you have to buy it on Steam. I've never used it but I've heard great things about TyranoBuilder, especially for those that don't have a lot of programming expertise. It comes with some assets built-in too. For music you'll just have to dig around. Over the years I've downloaded whatever royalty-free music I can--- Sentive is a good artist for this. DLSite.com has some royalty-free music and art you can buy also. Lastly, you can check the lemmasoft forums (the Ren'py home site), I know a lot of people just post their art for free use. Depending on your level of commitment you can learn how to draw with Corel Painter or Photoshop but it takes time. I've been doing this for years and still suck. ----‐------- You should also look into Twine. It's a great resource for prototyping interactive digital narrative. You can get something up and running really fast. There's some HTML and CSS support too if you want to make a fuller browser game. But usually you just use it to plan your script and the branching storylines. |

Re: FFR Visual Novel (A Simfile Dating Sim)
As an aside, if you're just after the meme, there's plenty of easier options. Just from experience, you'll get burned out with game dev if you're not actually trying to make it good. (Memes and quality aren't mutually exclusive of course.)
Setting personal goals and trying to make the best product you can, even if it is ultimately a meme, is a good way to actually stay motivated. Hell, all of my most ambitious memes, even FFR threads, are like that because I knew I'd get bored if I didn't strive to break my limits and maximally entertain the audience. By all means go for it, this kind of thing is a great creative outlet! You just need to find ways to stay motivated. |
