StepMania: Anything and Everything
A lot of us have been playing the game since it's very early days. SM3.0 seems like so long ago that it's a bit like a dream now. Since then the game, its people, its charts and its culture has gone through its fair share of ups and downs and so much has changed that it is hard to keep track of it all.
And I want to chronicle it. All of it. I want everything. I want the history, the game, the people, the rivalries, the charts and what people think the games future holds. I want old screenshots, pictures, archives, ideas, or thoughts. I want old players to speak up, and newcomers to ask us about things to get our collective creative StepMania juices flowing. I have a small plan written up that very few people know about, and to be honest not many more people are going to know much more than it. I am going to try to contact some other people for some specific help or knowledge. But please don't think that I don't or won't appreciate anything that anyone can give me. I also know that Arch0wl recently posted a thread asking about the games history and I do not want to take anything from him. I posted in it myself. This is my own project that I have decided to start so that I may chronicle everything I can about the game, and actually leave the community with something worthwhile after it has given me so much for so long. I will do my very best to acknowledge and thank everyone who can send something my way. I will be working on this project for a while, and I am online quite often, so please do not hesitate to talk if you have ideas, questions or critiques.

Re: StepMania: Anything and Everything
your biggest challenges will be
A. making this relevant for people who don't play the game and don't know what is going on B. separating this from the history of other music games, since they are so intertwined |

Re: StepMania: Anything and Everything
A. doesn't worry me as much as B. does.
I really want to help out the newcomers to the game, whether they are people from o!m or osu or lr2 or even just finding the game now on FFR. I generally feel like I should be able to make things simpler from an outsiders perspective, as I want this guide to be the starting point for everyone. I feel like when Staiain does his show at AGDQ that we might see a spike in interest in the game, if not players. A lot of them may have no experience at all. Granted, this might give me virtually no time at all to really get the project far enough that it would help them out, but I'm still going to give it a shot. As for your second point, I'll cross that bridge when I get there. It's the people that I'll be focusing on for that, I would really like input from the folks who have been around and get their perspective on growing with the game. I can only remember so much.

But people don't realize that: 1. this game is freeware (no advertising) 2. all rythm game companies have done awful marketing, branding, and product distribution a.harmonix got lucky with rock band for the first 2 games but that's it, the game is mostly dad rock and edgy emo shit, barely any metal for difficulty b. dj hero failed hard also lol 3 keys not even sound voltex has 3 keys c. bemani is a mongolian-taiwanese light-switch flipping game company exclusive to asian arcade circlejerks that still resents gaijins for hiroshima and nagasaki, therefore we only get smash the floor to 8ths revolution and... no, that's it The lack of popularity of stepmania is bound to the popularity of rythm games overall, but we are not "dying" we are simply a small playerbase |
