Stepmania can't open .jpg backgrounds?

I recently downloaded odipack3 and, upon trying to play it out, I started getting this error on almost every song in the pack:



Granted, I got this error in the past and didn't make a big deal out of this, but now it is rendering stepmania unuseable. After clicking "ok", the song selection wheel keeps on spinning by itself (because it doesn't know I removed my finger from the right arrow) and generates more error messages, which again repeat this process that keeps me from selecting songs.

I assume this is an isolated problem. Is this a current problem with the version of stepmania I'm using? Does playing on a mac have anything to do with that? Thanks.

never found out how to fix it..

since it happens with every song i'm assuming it's some compatibility problem..

happens to me too specifically on that song and others, and i believe it's because there's something wrong with the background image, or that it isn't in the folder, and then it's followed by infinite scrolling

however, at least on my theme, the scrolling stops if i start forcing it to scroll the opposite direction

and the error only occurs on like 2 or 3 songs in my entire song folder

op, have you tried clicking "Don't show again"?

otherwise i would open all of the files and remove their gfx as a last resort

Same with something something Breeze in 96 solo files

i have to scroll the other way to stop the scrolling too

I tried to click the don't show again thing, it doesn't work. I think it has to be .png, yet someone has to confirm that. Is there anything we could do? Literally 2/3 songs in odipack3 do this to me.

I'm currently trying to change their extension back to .pgn one by one at the moment, currently have nothing else to do (besides talking to hateandhatred and playing video games). Will come back with info if it works.

By the way, if it's really giving the error because of the .jpg, someone either has to fix stepmania 5 so it can read them, or we must raise awareness so that people make their backgrounds as .png. It would be great.

edit: yeah, forget it. It's not working. I'd have to fully convert them, which would take too much time. I guess it's out with the cool backgrounds, then.

my sm reads all of the odi3 files fine, so it's not a global problem

if this is happening ONLY with odi3 pack for you, it might be that your download or extraction of files was corrupted (for the images at least)

try redownloading the pack completely & replacing the files + reloading them

Nah it's not the first time. It happened with yessss's crimson rose & gin tonic, for example, and a few other files I can't remember.

For the record, to circumvent any error that causes the song wheel or other elements of the game to move uncontrollably, simply tap the direction that the error made the selection go (i.e. if the song wheel is spinning right, tap the right arrow)

obviously not a fix; I'm not sure why JPGs aren't working for you. Maybe it's a Mac thing?

I removed the .jpg from the folders that had them and left .pngs. It's working brilliantly now, but I'm missing a bunch of bgs.

oh god, that's happening because in the .sm files it still has the line

;BACKGROUND:jordan-bg.png

jesus christ, manually removing backgrounds isn't going to solve the problem

why anyone would even use JPEG format in 2013 is beyond my comprehension

JPEG is by far the worst file format when it comes to almost everything to do with graphics. I can spend a whole day talking about file formats when it comes to images but it's irrelevant to this thread so tl;dr version is stop using JPEG whoever is still living like it's year 2002

I know there is an option when compiling/building stepmania to enable/disable jpeg support. However, considering the image format itself, you are just better off using png... Although, I guess they disabled it when building by default? *shrugs* Just edit the file/change the stepfiles banner/background/etc as needed. (If uses jpeg)

Does it have anything to do with the file name? On Macs, file names are case-sensitive, so "background.jpg" would not work if the SM file specifies "background.JPG" or "Background.jpg". On Windows it doesn't matter, so people wouldn't notice if they mixed up the case.

No, it is not case-sensitive. Good guess, though. I tried to download the most up to date version of Stepmania like a user suggested on stepmania.com, I was previously using Stepmania v5.0 Preview 4, and now I'm using Stepmania v5.0 beta 2. It's not giving me errors anymore, but I have one last question:

With each new version of Stepmania coming out, I never can find where to change the c-mods/themes/noteskins because the technique to do it is never the same. If anyone could point me out how to change it, I'd be most grateful. I basically unzipped gamedata.smzip, which gave me "data" and "script" folders, and I can't find anything else.
