Which version?

I have been playing anonymously for about a week now on R^3, but I also see there are a multitude of other versions of the game (the only one that interested me, however, is FFRMania).

Which version should I use as a new player? The latest R^3 build? Or should I give FFRMania a whirl too? What's the difference?

Finally, if I'm using Flashplayer as a standalone client, should I be using the latest version of Flashplayer, or Flashplayer 9? I'm on OS X 10.9.

r^3 is the version you want to use. comparing r^3 and ffrmania is comparing apples and oranges -- r^3 is the engine that is used to run the standard ffr song list by default and ffrmania is an alternative song list that is also ran on r^3. if you are familiar with the songs and difficulties offered by stepmania packs, then ffrmania should suit you fine. otherwise, i'd just stick to the default song list.
