The ironic part about this is that people in education are NOT ALLOWED to tell anybody that someone has a mental illness. That defeats the purpose of GETTING THEM HELP. If nobody knows that somebody is mentally ill, how can they help them?

People need to start helping the people who are a bit "different", rather than just ignoring them.

Yeah.. well, practically everyone I've seen today is wearing either the jerseys, shirts, etc or wearing the colors. It's really nice, to see how much everyone cares here, but, I mean.. we don't want to linger on in the sadness. :/

I think of this day as a mix between remembering the victims, and also celebrating their lives. I mean, seriously, some of these people were just truly amazing, and that's what's important.

Well.. I have World History next block and uhm.. my WH teacher is like the biggest VTech fan I know. (She's around her 50's or 60's) And she attended there, obviously, for college, way back when.. >_>'

Mrs. Lynn Baker's Website
edit: also, her website didn't just recently change that way, it's been like that the whole year

Really apparent.
My science teacher also got this really neat picture and printed it out for me. I'll scan it and post it later, when I get home. Unless someone else has it. It's a picture of the VTech logo, and a bunch of other college/universities logo's downsized to fit inside of the VT logo, and in the corner, it has a ribbon and says "Today we are all Hokies"

You guys may be off this but this topic is still about the 31 dead at Virginia Tech.

Guns don't kill people, people kill people. A car can be seen as a dangerous weapon as well. Don't give me that "you need a lisense crap" to get a car, you need one to get a gun as well. At minimum you have to wait 72 hours to get a gun once you applied for it. Now you are going to say, "well people sell guns illigly", well people do that with cars to. Anything can be used to kill people. Guns aren't the problem, people are the problem.

Today at 11 AM central everyone in our school had to have a moment of silence. Anyone else had to do this?

Actually I don't think this is true. At least not in Texas. Here, teachers must know if a student has any modifications -- mental, behavior, language -- and is given a list of teaching methods that are approved to help the modified students get the most out of the classroom. If a teacher feels a student's mods aren't working, or feels a student who isn't modified needs to be, he or she can request a meeting with the student's ARD committee to discuss what's going on.

You can't talk about a student's mental health to just anyone -- it can't be like a colleague who wants specifics on a particular student. You're even allowed to say you are teaching or have taught special needs students, you just can't mention names. On all of my lesson plans I have to list my modifications -- no names, just "Student 1: These mods".

So, no, it's not impossible to get a student help. What makes getting a student help difficult is the fear of retaliation. When I was in high school a teacher who is not my friend turned some "disturbing" poetry over to the counselor because she worried about the student who had written it, and after the counselor talked to the boy, he killed a rat and left it in my teacher's classroom. Knowing this, and knowing the personalities of some of the kids I have worked with, I don't know that I would be so quick to turn in a student I worried about.

I'd rather watch the Simpsons than a news report on a massacre. The news is depressing.
