Some folks on /v/ have a live video feed of people playing the game in advance in Japan. I can't find this source, but people are taking screenshots of the feed.

Luigi confirmed:

The story has a lot to do with the antagonists in the games doing bad things to the protagonists in the games. There's a lot of trophyification going on.

This isn't on the Dojo.

This is a leak from a guy in Japan who got an advance copy of the game.

I have no rhyme or reason for why things happen.

Here's what I know from observing /v/ for about 2 hours:

Antagonists: Wario, Bowser, Ganondorf, DeDeDe. They all seem intent on making the protagonists into trophies. Ganondorf seems to hold some sway over the others. In the meantime, some kind of dark cloud possesses certain characters. I've seen images of dark bowser and dark zelda. The character stories clash at certain points in their paths.

The match-ups are generally "who was where after X happened". For example, Fox gets attacked by the Halberd (metaknight's ship). He crashes in DK Jungle. Diddy finds him. Boom, pair. Ganondorf uses Pikachu to run a generator in Samus's ship. Boom, pair. Harder to explain, but yeah, pair.

Pairs? Or... triplets?
